Cheers Graham  ,

Thats the passenger side back top corner, right next to where the bumper mounts, the wiring you can see is the rear light loom. That area looked ok, but a quick poke with a screwdriver revealed it was only seam sealer and underseal, the metal underneath had completely rotted out! :o:) Bit unnerving really, but ive thoroughly checked the whole shell now and found all the rot.

I really cant wait to get it done now, its going to be so nice to have my car back again, just hope i can get her out for the south meet! :D

On the lookout for a MI head on its own already for stage 2 (thought id get another head to minimise the time the car is off the road), which ive decided is going to be cams (nothing too lairy as its my everyday car), 3 angle valve seats, shells and whatever else needs doing to the bottom end from a freshening up POV. Want to get this done asap, as the motor really is going to be the only bit of the whole car that hasnt been freshened up/fiddled with.

Sorry to see you're finding so much rust :D

But it's great to see that you're undeterred by it, and making such a thorough job of removing it all :)

:angry::o :o

Not a big surprise really though considering that any spray from the wheels goes straight there if you haven't got any kind of mud flaps fitted (which most don't). Scares me about starting proding around on mine though as I've seen some surface rust on the crossmember when I've changed the beam & would love to tackle it but haven't got the right place to do it, yet.

Like Andy says, great to see that even when you discover even more rot when you thought you'd already got it all that you aren't deterred by it & keep on at it with the same vigor.

Thanks for all the encouragement im getting people, does make a real difference having people egging you on, esp when yet more rot is uncovered! :D:angry::)

Maybe my car should be used as a bit of a warning, as it barely showed any signs of rot on the outside at all, even the underneath wasnt bad enough to worry me from just a look. On an F plate aswell so not one of the notoriously 'rottier' ages of 205.

But as you say Graham its really not worth starting unless you have the right place to do it. Its a nasty job which may aswell be done right straight off, im hoping this work will stand me in good steed for 10 years minimum now, which is what im looking for as ive no plans to ever sell this car. :):o

LOL i know what you mean Ben. Cant complain as other peoples road/race cars is how i make my money! :o:D In the end even if i had the money, id still be doing this, mainly because i cant stand other people working on my car, esp if its work i can do myself! Also I do enjoy it, mainly the enormous satisfaction il get the first time i drop her off the stands and fire it up. :wub:B) Typical engineer really i suppose!

Car as it stands now still owes me under £1500 including buying it, running it for a year (parts/consumables), getting the MI motor, all the new parts ive collected so far, and all the work done. Not bad value really!

Well anyway ive added more pictures today, mainly of my fabricated plate for the rear corner rust, and seam sealing/more red oxiding! The fabricated plate im going to spot weld in on the three corner lips, because the metal here isnt great quality, so im hesitant to do any seaming in case i make more work for myself. In the end any gaps will be thoroughly seam sealed/oxided, so no worries there. Also if anything inside the car had caught whilst being welded, i have no access to that corner of the shell (not quickly anyway), so the fire risk wasnt worth it! Nothing amazing but the next couple of days should see some real visual progress!

Would have done more, but it was a nice sunny bank holiday, and a friend of mine dropped over in his rag top m-tech E36 beemer, so top down cruise to country pub was called for! :DB)

Go to photobucket HERE and get an account, then just upload the photos to it and put some links to the photos up in a new topic in Body, Interior and Ice. Then we can all have a look and give you our thoughts.

I wouldnt get too alarmed, id say my car has had a hard life, probably been by the sea for a portion of it aswell. Its also had big wheels at some point which have caught the arches like buggery, so thats caused the rust there. My main point is that alot of the surface rust is hidden under the sealer, its not a major thing but obviously major rot starts off as surface rust... :)

Easiest thing to do is get underneath with a lead lamp and have a poke around, see what you find. :D

Pics updated again

Well ive done all the rust on the floorpan now! Just got the inner arch and 3/4 panel bit to do tomorrow, and the rust is gone! Really pleased with how the welding went, not easy welding to half corroded, piss thin metal :) , but after a little fiddling, got the welder set up sweet and all was good.

Also cleaned the crud off the drivers side floorpan and then degreased the whole underside, ready for paint.

And i cleaned up the driveway and garage- good day all round!

Cant wait to see the underneath all painted now... B):P

Ive gotta say the thought has crossed my mind! Im a bit of a 'jack of all trades' with cars anyway, can do everything pretty well, but I specialise in builds and suspension work mainly at the moment. In the end as long as im interested in it, il do it.

Its nice seeing a car take shape again when its in a bad state, i remember being the same donkeys years ago watching/helping my dad restoring an old 3.5l Rover. Could only have been 9 at the time!

Fancy having a go at another one? :)

A customer left a 3.5 P6 with us nearly 3 years ago, then promptly fell off the edge of the planet!

It's currently sat here, awaiting further instructions. (and it's an absolute minter of a car)

LOL thats exactly what we restored, and id do another at the drop of a hat! :P Ours was absolutely stunning by the end of it, finished in dark brown (looked good!), had the wheel mounted on the boot and everything! Had a beige/cream leather interior as i recall aswell...?

Sold it on a year or two later in the end. Brilliant cars, il own one some day... :)

3 years ago, where the hell has he gone?!

3 years ago, where the hell has he gone?!

Firstly sorry. I'm doing my usual thing of dragging things off-topic again :)

After restoring a P5 for one of his mates, he dropped it off with us for the full monty. The car doesn't need it IMO, as it's unbelievably mint anyway! 38k on the clock, and the seats look as though they've never been sat in. But work was started as per his instructions, and we told him we would require a few extra parts (screen rubbers mainly). That was the last we heard from him. All efforts to contact him have failed. We're currently trying to work out the legalities of it all, and maybe one day, the car will be mine :P

The bootful of parts would be a goldmine for an enthusiast: Four brand new, genuine wings, and all sorts of chrome parts, lamps, etc, still wrapped up in waxed paper, and in their original blue and white BL boxes!!!

im a bit cionfudsed or less knowledgable. your going to weld a patch in the wing, but youve already red oxide primered, is it like weld through primer.

i ask because ine is on the same state at the mo and going to atttack the underside soon, and if there is any rust i will tackle that aswell.DSC00522.jpg

Id only primered it to protect the metal from the elements, seeing as the car is kept outside, it will be removed again for welding. This is actually all done now (the welding that is), so more pictures coming tonight. :)

Shiny new pictures

Havent updated for a few days now, but ive just been too lazy to do it! Got a fair chunk of work finished off, as you can see from the pics. Im really pleased with how the work on the underneath has gone, TBH the pictures dont really do it justice, its well shiny! :)

All that is left now is a tiny bit of rust inside the car and shes good as new. Before that gets attended to, im going to re-run the brake and fuel lines (remade all the rear brake lines), get the tank back in, get the newly refurbished beam on and get the rear end back on wheels (although these will need to come off again to change the tyres!). Got a couple of bits to touch up in the bay in my detail freak kinda way, then subframe in again, engine in, plumb it all in, get it running, then its bodywork time....

Getting there. ^_^

Better link

Pants link above, this one takes you straight there!

Forgot to mention above, im having an interior related drama at the moment aswell, ie, ive no seats! Was going to get some reclining buckets, but money blah blah yadda yadda....

Anyway, thought id get a decent phase 2 half or full leather interior to tide me over until ive got some more cash for some nice front seats, then could sell the other interior on...

...easy, right? WRONG! Can i find a decent set of seats? Can i fcuk! Plus 205 Parts dont seem to answer e-mails (twice, to 2 different adresses)/want business, so the search goes on. Ho-hum... ^_^
