  1. Hi there, just bought a '92 205 xl 1.6 auto (the later assembly XU). Is there any way of checking the timing for a new cam belt? there has been no belt on the engine for a while now and just want to check before I go putting on a new belt that the timing is correct. Can't seem to find any other info online about how to do this. This is all new to me and it's an absolute mindf*ck to get my head around! any help is much appreciated P.s if anyone has any info thats worth knowing about this model of 205, let me know. There doesn't seem to be a lot of info out there about the 1.6 xl auto
  2. Hi All I'm wondering if there is anyone who can help me out? I brought a 1.6 205 GTI a while ago, been a bit of a project. had an engine rebuild as it had flat cams, and head gasket had gone. But since then Myself and a friend who is a mechanic have struggled to get it to run properly/well It all seems to be linked into the timing as we have fuel etc, but can't find a way to time it? no obvious marks etc Is there anyone out there who knows how to do it??? Thanks in advance
  3. After far too many years I've decided to give the car a cambelt change. The old one looked very good considering its been on there 8 years, but don't want to take risks. Anyway, currently trying to fit the new one and am not convinced I've got it on correctly. The cams and crank seem to be lined up correctly using the pins, but the tension of the belt doesn't feel right on the top run between the two camshaft spockets. It feels very loose, but I can't pull it any tighter as it's not quite a whole tooth stretch to do this. I suppose a good way of knowing whether I've got the belt on correctly is counting the teeth on the run between the two cam sockets. Would anyone know how many teeth I would expect to have if counting between the 12 o'clock position on each sprocket (assuming the engine in a vertical, not the normal tilted, position)?

    Flywheel

A simple question - I hope!! Can any one tell me if the 5mm cut-out gap on the edge of the flywheel is the timing mark? Cheers
  5. Hi there, Looking for a bit of advice! After trauling the forums and checking everything possible and changing anything questionable, the only thing left to get the engine running correctly, in my opinion, is the problem that it will only run with the distributor fully advanced (the timing is wrong somewhere, surely). And at that, it isn't running nicely, and has to tickover at a good 2000 revs to keep it going, however, it does start on the button with no rev fluctuations. It is a J Reg 1.6 205 CTi. Dizzy number 086 I had a mechanic round and we changed the timing belt (as I didn't trust myself) and yes, the timing was out by about 4 or 5 teeth on the crank. After doing this the car ran a bit better and started a lot easier, but still only on full advance. Next thought was the dizzy, it didn't have a vac advance and was looking a bit sad, so I've had that refurb'd and an advance put on it, however the problem is still there. (H&H) Other than the dizzy and timing belt, I don't know what else could cause the timing to be out? Only thing I can think is to move the cam away from the stock settings at the belt, but that doesn't seem right to me. No matter how old it is.. Any thoughts? If anyone is kind enough and willing like to have a look, I'm in Sheffield and have plenty of time as it is a garaged project not a day to day runner. I look forward to your replies!
  6. G'day all, Figured a UK forum might be the go here; I have a 1988 Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9 that has just arrived here in Tasmania from the UK. I want to change the cambelt and with it the tensioner and the water pump but not sure which I need. The engine has the tag 'D6B' Do I get 113 tooth or 114? Which tensioner? Which water pump? Better still, can anyone recommend a complete kit and where I can get it? eBay listings seem very vague and contradictory! Cheers Mike
