Now that my axle was officially condemned by the place I took it to, and I’ve hopefully a new tube on the way, I thought it would be an interesting exercise to chop up the old axle to have a look at it. When originally trying to take the trailing arm shafts out, the shafts were firmly jammed in the tube, and looked like the bearings had collapsed. In desperation I took it to a local guy who has built a few axles in the past. He had a hydraulic ram to pull the shafts out ( after burning a hole in the shaft), but even then they wouldn’t budge (popped a seal in his ram). So today i invested 1 cutting disc and found this: I thought I was cutting the bearing out of one side, but then I realised that this tube must have been sleeved in the past: The other side didn’t seem to have this. Its inner bearing was in decent condition, could read MADE IN FRANCE and the part number on it: But the outer was tatties: This was off a 1 owner, 107,000 mile car. I’m a bit surprised the tube was sleeved but given the corrosion seen here maybe i shouldn’t be. The corrosion seemed to get by to the outer bearing, but the inners seem pretty rust-free. Anyway thought I’d share!

So I have a project car going strong, and have hit a bit of a technical hitch. I knew it was coming but delayed addressing it anyway There is lots of info on here (and very good stuff too) about suspension when lowering 205s and how to avoid excessive negative camber, but what to do if you've done the stupid thing and raised it so have massive positive camber... Note I've lifted it by fitting 405 diesel struts/springs/shocks. Nothing else yet. The rear is fine obviously, but the front now needs a load more negative. I'm not sure that 309 arms would give enough - also my car is a non-GTI so has the TCA setup. Are the 309 lower track arms also ~10mm longer than the 205s or is that only the GTI wishbones? I'm not concerned too much about handling and addressing the finesse of bump and rebound as this isn't a track car or anything remotely similar. I just want it back to a neutral setup so it drives normally. Any thoughts on this other than the 309 arms? And will base 309 TCAs also be longer than 205 TCAs? Any help greatly appreciated, and apologies for not conforming to the 'lowered GTI' stance

I bought a set of Gaz Gold coilovers about three years ago and have only just gotten around to getting ready to fit them but I've hit a bit of a snag. I didn't get adjustable top mounts at the time, and have a vague memory of reading they could be used with standard Pug top mounts. Is this correct? If so, I can't for the life of me figure out how it all goes together. I assumed I could just swap the standard spring top keeper plate for the blue Gaz thing, but it looks wrong and the thread for the top nut would be too short. Does the blue bit just go straight under the standard cup thing under the rubber with the roller bearing removed or just straight under the rubber or something? Thanks.

keeperlit posted a topic in Brakes, Suspension & Steering
Hi folks, Thought this info might be of use to some ppl looking at a rear beam rebuild. :-) Not sure if it's in the right forum, so please keep me right. After seeing some comments about the cheaper Febi Bilstein replacement trailing arm shafts I ordered a replacement one from Allan Kay Components in Doncaster - £53 bought online and including delivery all the way to Belfast: https://www.partsfor...ducts_id=165495 Very happy with the service I got from them, quick despatch and friendly emails from Allan who appears to be the main sales contact there. Should be waiting for me today when I get home or possibly tomorrow. Keith-
