  1. Dear All, I've had the starter motor clicking problem getting gradually worse for quite a while now. As with the other threads describing this, the key would turn, you'd hear a click from under the bonnet somewhere, and nothing would happen. Then, often if you keep turning the key over and over, eventually the starter would kick into life and everything would be good. Over the last couple of weeks this has gotten so bad that unless the battery was literally full (or on the charger), then no starting at all! So, I decided to do a little rewiring work in the engine bay, and also add the relay booster circuit which is described in several of the other threads. I took the opportunity to do a few things at once, including new starter motor, new alternator, completely replace everything after the brown multiplug (previously replaced with superseals), and add the relay. The relay circuit uses the starter feed from ignition, to energize a relay, before going to earth. The switched circuit of the relay goes from the large permanent live on the starter motor, through the relay and back to the solenoid start terminal which the starter feed would originally have been connected to, as shown in the below picture. Is this correct? Testing this on the bench, it seemed to work perfectly. Starter would come on, and stop immediately on removal of the signal feed to the relay. I then fitted it to the vehicle, and reassembled everything. When I came to start up for the first time, she fired immediately. Almost like she was on a hair trigger! Which I was delighted with, up until I noticed the engine noise was very different. I immediately switched off, and after the engine had stopped I could hear the starter winding down. i.e. the starter was remaining engaged (and powered) even though the ignition was not in the starting position. I tried starting several times, always with the same effect. So I've neatly gone from no starter at all, to a starter which won't turn off! Great. Does anyone have any ideas of what I've done wrong here? I've done quite a bit of work around the front end, so my relay mod might not be the only possible cause. I did notice that the starter is very twitchy on the key, and kicks in immediately if you so much as tickle the key past the ignition on position. Therefore, I was wondering if the ignition barrel might be making partial contact in ignition on, which isn't enough to cause a problem without the relay, but now is enough to be relevant? If that were the case you'd expect it to be permanently on whenever you've moved the key into the on position (but not as far as start). Any suggestions would be gratefully received! Many thanks, Mike
  2. It's been covered many times and I've followed a few topics and even bought the newer M001T80481 Starter. A Mitsubishi type too. Though I still get the click, click, of the solenoid when turning the key but no starter motor action. I had the same problem with many re-furbished starters on my old Gti and always lived with the problem as it usually starts after about 3 or 4 turns, but its annoying and embarrassing. After reading that the original old style starters could be suffering from heat soak I bought the later M001T80481 type and it fits perfectly to my CTi. I replaced all the main thick starter/alternator wiring and the little length to the slam panel fuse box in hopes that it would help, but still no difference. If I connect a wire direct from the battery to the solenoid I have no problems, but its a bit of an unconventional way to start the car My guess is there's a bad connection somewhere between the live to the ignition barrel back to the solenoid. (the connector on the solenoid is new). I'm going to replace the two multi plugs from the ignition barrel this weekend with aftermarket ones, other than that I'm out of ideas other than fit a starter button. Is there any other connector that can be changed / bypassed?
  3. Can any one assist me with a wiring diagram for my 1991 205GTI with Motronic Injection.
  4. Hi all, I have been having a recurring problem with my turbo diesel which is slightly bizzarre and was wondering if anyone can help me get to the bottom of it. Basically on very hot days when the car has been for a longish run, long enough for the engine to get quite hot if I switch the engine off and then try to start it again it won't start. When I turn the key nothing happens, it doesn't try and turn over at all. There is just a small 'click' noise, which does sound like its inside the dash rather than in the engine bay but I might be wrong. If I let the car cool down with the bonnet open for half an hour or so it will start again without the need for a jump start. The problem only occurs when the weather is hot and when the car has been for a run. If the car hasn't been for a run and the engine is cool (but weather really hot) it will start which suggests something has to get really hot (e.g. combination of a hot ambient temperature and hot engine) for the problem to occur? I had the same problem last summer and a few people on here suggested it might be the starter motor. When I took it to the garage they said it was just that the battery was knackered (it had almost no charge) and replaced it. The starter motor was not touched. I had no problems starting after that and over the winter period, but now the weather has got hot again the problem has returned. It doesn't seem to be a battery/charging issue as it will start again after at least a half hour cooling down period. I'm now wondering if when I had this problem last summer me repeatedly trying to start it knackered my old battery somehow? I don't particular want to damage my new one either. I also don't have any immobiliser fitted (as far as I know, there is no remote or signs of wiring for one in the engine bay). Well, if you can make sense of my description of the problem good on you! Any help much appreciated.
