Hello I was hoping to find some in here with a great knowledge about the XU engine (should be the right place I've come ). I have a 306 Cabriolet from 1998 with a XU7JP engine (1.8 8v 101 HP). Yes the car is from 1998, and yes it came with that engine from factory. I've had a thew who didn't believe me . Right now the car is in winter storage and have been since November. Last week I moved it so a car behind it could come out. It fired right up like it had run the day before, and the engine sounded just as healthy as the day is was parked there last year. I let the car idle for about 30 minutes before it was put back. I noticed some steam coming out from under the hood when I drove the car in again, and after a quick inspection I'm 99 % sure that the head gasket have started to disintegrate. Water is leaking out between the block and the head, and it seems that it's all the way across the engine (at least where I could see). There was no smoke, no oil in the water, water in the oil or hard cooling lines. It didn't bother me that much, I've done maybe 10 head gaskets on TU engines and I'm not really scared of the procedure. I ordered a new gasket, head bolts and some other small things I would imagine is worn. But after reading a bit about the XU engine, I discovered that there are different kind of head bolts. The car right now have inside torx head bolts. I have ordered head bolts with a outside torx head. I didn't notice untill after I made the purchase that there was a difference. Other than the head of the bolt, they are exactly the same. Can I use my ordered bolts, or do I have to get a new set? I read that if you use bolts with a normal six-sided head for a car that originally had torx bolts, you could strip the threads in the block. And are there anything else I should be worried about when removing and reinstalling the head?

Tu3 1.4 Cylinder Head / Cooling System Problem
RichardG posted a topic in TU Engine Maintenance and Performance Upgrades
Hi, I'm a new member with a problem. Wonder if anyone can help? We have a 1987 205GR with 1.4 TU3 engine. 74,000 miles. ex Peugeot management car (mine) and owned from new. It's now only getting light use but has strong sentimental attachment for the family and is too good to scrap. Engine has been running hottish for some while i.e. cooling fans cut-in sooner than seemed right. Also had a tendency to sometimes run-on after switching-off. Otherwise it ran well. I flushed the cooling system, replaced the thermostat, radiator, temp sensor and water pump. Didn't make much difference, so soldiered on for a couple of years. Now the temp warning light is coming-on and the cooling system is becoming excessively pressurised; blowing lots of coolant from the expansion bottle which quickly drains the system. Car is unusable for more than 10 mins. It felt like a head gasket issue so......... I have carefully removed the head, carefully cleaned all surfaces of the head and block, checked head and block for flatness with edge of a steel rule, reseated the valves, fitted a new head gasket, torqued head bolts to setting in Haynes manual, reassembled everything and bled the cooling system to let any air out. Engine now starts and runs but the water problem is still occurring. After running for 2 minutes, water is being blown out of the expansion bottle. I re-used the original head bolts and did not have the head skimmed. It looked OK QUESTIONS - Should I have lightly dressed the upper face of the new gasket with Hylomar or a similar gasket sealer? Is it possible the head bolts have 'streched' over the years and are now not keeping sufficient pressure on the head? Are TU3 Aluminium heads particularly prone to leaking, cracking or internal failure? (I looked for signs of a hairline but all seemed OK) What else other than a head gasket might be causing the problem? Thought I'd seek advice before taking it all apart again. Suggestions would be welcome. (does anyone have a 'known-to-be-good' TU3 head available to buy?) Cheers- 1 reply

Hi all, After all the fun with my fire a few weeks ago and Anthony kindly helping me out with a replacement interior the car started overheating and there was some evidence of oil in the water. Today I finally got around to removing the head and it looks pretty good but the block seems to have a few cracks in it so sadly it looks like a new engine for me.... Absolutely gutted I was really looking forward to enjoying some summer driving.
