Cold Starting Problem - Misfire, Hunting And Cutting Out
will1991 posted a topic in XU 8v Engine Maintenance and Performance Upgrades
Hi all, As you can see my post count is very low, but I've spent a HUGE amount of time trawling this site! For reference, the car is a 100% standard '91 1.9 GTI with 56k on it. I've got a starting problem - on start up from cold the car will misfire and if you don't catch the revs, will cut-out. Taking the car to 2.5-3k rpm will get rid of the misfire and then if you hold the revs at c.1500rpm for a few secs will then stick at about 1400rpm which then drops to about 1100 rpm before the SAD closes up. At this point the revs will hunt between maybe 500-1200rpm, often cutting out when coming to a hault in traffic. Once the car has warmed up a bit, it'll run fine. The car originally ran nicely without issue. It all went wrong following a service which saw all fluids replaced as well as fuel filter, oil filter, air filter, plugs, leads, dizzy cap and rotor arm with the throttle body, SAD, hoses, and AFM all cleaned out at the same time. Since then I've tried different leads, different cap, different SAD and new HT coil, none of which made any difference. What did work was putting the old plugs back in, the car started well and without misfire about 3 times before reverting to being a pain - does this indicate something is wrecking the plugs? if so, what could it be? Other things I know: There appear to be no air leaks - infact, before the car had starting problems it had a small leak at the sunroof T peice which was subsequently fixed. The vac advance appears to be working following the suck test the car cuts out as soon as the AFM is unplugged it cuts out when the CTS is unplugged I've tried adjusting the mixture screw to both extremes and everywhere in between with no success. I know this is a problem that has come up before, but like I say I've been through the site over and over and feel like I'm running out of possible solutions - if anybody has any ideas or is based in Derby and has some knowledge or bits they's be willing to swap over to test my more suspect components I'd be really grateful. I'm really annoyed at myself actually, its a fantastic, very clean car and my (well intentioned) service seems to have set it back some-what. http://s234.photobuc...ot%20205%20GTI/ Thanks, Will- 22 replies

Mi16 Cutting Out When Warm
DGTi posted a topic in XU 16v Engine Maintenance and Performance Upgrades
Hi All, more help required please!!Lol I picked up the 205 this weekend, well I tried to anyway I got about 5 miles away from the garage and it cut out, and wouldn't restart it was just cranking on the starter and, at best, spluttering a bit and backfiring spectacularly! After about 5 minutes of poking about at plugs without finding a loose one it was suggested to adjust the AFM screw, which I did, and there was a difference, for the worse! So I turned it the other way and it started!! I'm wasn't sure weather it was this adjustment or the fact the engine had cooled that allowed it to re-start, but I carried on never the less. About another mile up the road the same thing happened again!! So I pulled over and tried the screw again to no avail (I couldn't remember which way I was turning it) and the engine wouldn't even splutter at this point, just kept turning over on the starter. I had the car towed back to the garage and the mechanic has had a look at it today for me. He has just rang back to say that he managed to adjust the AFM to allow the car to re-start this morning but it again cut out when hot, and wouldn't re-start! So he adjusted the AFM and got it to start when warm and it would rev normally warm. He then allowed the engine to cool back off for a few hours and came back to try it again and with the AFM set when warm it wouldn't start cold!? I have searched the forums about AFM's and read a lot about idle issues but nothing describing my symptoms! Is the AFM knackered or is this just a symptom of another component not working properly, that we're compensating for with the AFM!? Sorry for the long post, so close to having this on the road its unreal it was like a little tease session on Saturday - painful!!lol Cheers Andy- 35 replies

Problems After Replacing Starter
gavbrum posted a topic in XU Engine & Gearbox Service and Maintenance - ARCHIVE
After replacing my starter motor I've managed to get it to fire and start (just), but it just farts a bit and I have to keep revving it to keep it going. If it drops below 1000 rpm it just splutters and cuts out. I've retraced my steps from fitting the new starter and found these wires loose but due to the number wires that are not connected on the gti ive no idea if they are meant to connected at all. http://s1061.photobu...4A23B4518A0.jpg Any ideas if this might be the culprit? Typical Just As I Go To Get An Mot
Weser posted a topic in XU Engine & Gearbox Service and Maintenance - ARCHIVE
So my Gti has been stood up for a year but has been started reguarly and driven around with no problems. Yesterday I wanted to get an MOT on it as I want to insure it in May when I am 25. I thought best do it early to sort out any little problems it may have so I can then just use it when its insured Anyway started it up fine from cold but it was running rough. It seemed to be overfuelling. If you held the revs it runs fine. Once warmed up the overfuelling was worse it would tick over and then cut out. I have checked fuel and spark all good. I am thinking its either a coolant sensor of AFM. Not 100% sure about the AFM as it shouldn't get worse when its hot if the AFM was the problem should it? Also I have adjusted the AFM before and it was then spot on. It had a coolent sensor a couple of years ago as well. Before when that was causing trouble it ran fine when it was cold but overfueled when it was warm. Similar to now but it was much more obvious which makes me wonder if its not the coolent sensor? I havent had time to play with this yet hopefully at the weekend I will get a bit of time but I was wondering if anyone else has any ideas of what I should look at that could cause this problem.- 11 replies
