Hello, I’m restoring a ‘91 205 GTI 1.9 with abs, and am currently refurbishing the rear beam. I’ve come across the 2 brake load compensators/regulators at each side (the ones with the small pushrod onto the trailing arm). These have turned to dust on removal, and are impossible to replace. My question is: Is it worth trying to retrofit a similar compensator/regulator from a 306, or just bin the lot and fit the 2 small inline compensators that a 1.9 without abs would have (those fitted behind the fuel tank)? I’ve seen this picture below which I think is a 205, but has a 306 compensator fitted. I would only need the 1 unit, but would have to run both pipes to the rear of the car to it, and then a pipe across the beam to the other wheel. Is it worth the hassle?

I need to replace one of the drums on my GTI. The 1.6 GTI used Girling brakes for the drums. As I understand, there were different size drums across the 205 range. How many different variations are there, and what size do I need for the GTI? In Australia we had 2 models that used drums on the rear - base model 205 Si and early model 205 GTI. Please provide more info! Thanks

I'm a bit stuck trying to work out the difference in design/how each works, of these brake limiters in the 205 1.6 & 1.9GTi and the 3091.6SRi &other 1.6 injection models?GRi? and 3091.9 GTI - maybe others not sure so photo 1 - from previous advice and reading the Haynes I think it works using a ball bearing inside. It seems this in installed horizontally in the 2051.6 gti models in the engine bay under the ignition coil. bigger in size than the second type below must be because it has a large ish ball bearing inside (?) this makes sense that it works on inertia because its mounted horizontally or close to H, it would appear the outlet is on the front so maybe the ball bearing moves forward when braking deceleration - that would make sense right(9?) that limits the fluid out under braking. photo 2 - are these just pressure limiters? they appear to have smaller size. not big enough for anything inside. there are different part numbers listed for the 1.6 309injection modelXU5 and the 309 1.9. gti?XU9 I think that the 309 gti 1.9 had two brake lines for the rear with one of these limiters in each line. Each line is served by one port from the Master cylinder at the front/1st circuit? I need to check that though I am not 100% the 1.6 SRi 309 has both brakes served by one port from the master cylinder/ nearest the driver on the left I pictured the old one from the 1.6 sri and the new one I got which I think is the correct part no Ill need to double check this now as it could be the 1.9gti version - they look the same so I ll need to check I have seen like "smaller versions" of these on the 1.9 205 gti installed at the rear in the lines. well look similar it's a hexagon shape in cross section that looks the same I guess. the length is much smaller. could cut old one in half I guess to make sure - pretty expensive though even hard to get them new again! I need to work out what part numbers are, peugeot part numbers and bosch part number for my 1.6 injection single one in line to rear - as previous advice and discussion it is in the engine bay seems to be vertically mounted. therefore these type 2 ones cannot be inertia devices ? they must just be pressure limiters / proportionate reduction devices? Ill figure it out eventually I guess LoL

brakes 309 - angle of brake limiter in rear line
Richard309Sri XU5JA 205GTi posted a topic in Brakes, Suspension & Steering
Ok before you say it, I know this is the 205 gti drivers forum but can someone - maybe one of the 309 guys? - help me - advise me the 2 following points about the REAR brake line/set up on a 1.6 SRi 309 1987 1. what angle the brake line limiter in the 309 should be? ref pic #1 I believe it is similar set up to the 205 1.6 GTi with drum brakes rear. I also have drum brakes rear. I also have the rear brakes served from one rear port of the 19mm bendix MC I got good advice from people incl. Welshpug before about the 1.6 limiter. mine is slightly different to the 1.6 205 but in a similar position in the engine bay I attach photo of where the rear brake line turns up into the engine bay. it look like the fixing clip would take the line up at about 35 degree from horizontal? I should I have taken a photo before I took the old one off but it was ages ago and done not well planned out due to engine failure. I have got both an original and brand new limiter, one** which will fix into this line next. I did not change the original line that goes up into the engine bay so that cant be wrong thank god and also that means that limiter can only go one way around so that is great also I cant cock that up 2. anyone know how long is the brake pipe that originally went from the master cylinder to the input of the limiter is? The old one snapped and a piece is now missing. I think it followed along the top of the bulk head - as per photo two ? it kinda bends around many times there's a space in the fixing block for it. Its just how to bend it around and what angle the limiter is at that will make the final length I guess. yeah parallel to the front right brake viewed from front. I ll check the part cat. asap also any help be great -
Morning all, Does anyone know if the brake pipe union bolts are all the same size/type on the standard 1.6 piping with Bendix up front and Girling at the rear please? I reckon I need a load of these https://www.autodoc.co.uk/ate/193196 but just wanted to check here, just in case there's one or two outliers that I've missed. Cheers Ian.

Hi, I have just had new rear shoes and pads and also new cylinders and brake cables fitted to my gti which is all standard. One of the brakes though is locking and getting hot but the other is fine. Even with the offending shoe completely slackened off it is locking slightly. They are the Girling type brakes, could this be a master cylinder problem or is this possibly something else?

Hey all, Can anyone clarify for me which type of brakes will be on my standard 1989 G plate 1.6 please? As I'm aware they could be Bendix or Girling but I don't know which - is there a definitive guide or is it a case of just having a look? If the latter - how do I tell which are which please? I'll be looking to do the front discs and pads and the rear shoes at some point in the future so would be handy to know. Cheers Ian.
