Power steering gear column bush replacement
ladderboy posted a topic in Brakes, Suspension & Steering
I removed the (power assisted) steering rack from my 205 1.9 GTi due to fluid leaking from the point where the column enters the rack gear. Bought a new bush repair kit from Ebay (Peugeot part number 400609.) Now I can;t figure out how to disassemble the rack to get the new bush kit in. Can anyone help? Have I bought the right part? Really don't want to take whole rack apart as the rest seems fine, was just the PAS fluid leak. Thanks! -

Hi there,im looking for some help.... My 205 1.8 Diesel mardi grass m reg (94) 5 door has odd stiff steering when going lock to lock,it will be free then suddenly stiffen then go smooth then stiffen etc. i have changed both top strut bearings and there are no leaks from the power steering, checked tyres etc...i have decided the (uj) universal joint has worn and there is an awful lot of play in the steering wheel when stationary,i have looked everywhere and am stuck on what to do as its no ran out of m.o.t and will fail because of the (UJ) Im wondering if there is anybody out there that can tell me where to buy new or rebuild ones or even a second hand one for sale?? any help? i got a quote of £170 for a new one from arnold clark but theres no way im paying that haha im stuck, could you help me? Thanks Stuart -
My 205 1.9 GTi has just started developing an irritating quirk. At low speeds I get juddering through the steering wheel, which is still present at high speeds but less noticeable (probably masked by other general vibrations). I've checked the wishbones and drop-links and there's no play on anything there. The tyres look fine to me (unless I've missed something). I'm at a bit of a loss to what the cause could be. The overall handling also feels flawed and lacks the usual tightness and confidence. I'm sure it gets quite understeery on right handers too. Any suggestions welcome!

Hi all, Ive got a rack ive rebuilt myself using locally manufactured (australian) seals to rebuilt a 205 Si rack (so non-gti rack which has 2.8ish turns opposed to 3.2) using std spline drive. engine is an rfs gti6 with a 306 cabriolet (n3?) pump its had about 5 hours of use before it blew out the top pinion seal, it was coming out like a fountain, as i was pulling into a carspace, and it had some very hard driving the day before. im yet to dissasemble it to check whats gone wrong, but im after some advice as i suspect I may be correcting a symptom not a cause. My thoughts are ive nicked one of the high pressure seals inside (and the top one that blew out is just a dust seal more than anything, not designed for pressure), or scored the housing, the pump has a faulty pressure release valve or ive just used the wrong fluid. I used a castrol version of dextron III. Advice/thoughts/criticism? Much appreciated.

Does anybody happen to know what size fittings I would need for the high pressure PAS hose to connect a Xsara VTS Rack to a 106 electric PAS pump? I'm thinking of using a flexible hose for the whole length, does that sound like a good idea? And can I just get standard hydraulic hose made up, or is there a particular pressure/type of hose I need? I've slowly been gathering parts to get this conversion done, but wont have much time to actually get everything fitted once I get started, so i'm trying to make sure I've got everything sorted before I get cracking! Thanks

My 1987 F Reg 205 GTI 1.9 has very heavy steering. She sits on normal 185 55 15 tyres but not original speedline wheels, after market Italian ones, I can't see why that would make a difference. Any ideas?
