Hi, I've not posted on here for a while and I'm not sure whether I've posted in the right area. Apologies if not. Thing is I've bought a new brake master cylinder for my 1.6 gti and the car is in the garage being worked on. I've now realised that the 1.6 and 1.9 gti may have different master cylinder bore sizes, 19mm and 20.6mm although a compatibility chart I saw on one website seems to suggest that both versions may have had 20.6mm version until 1988 after which it may have only been spec for the 1.9gti (see below for the chart). The question is whether members have any experience with different the two different bore size cylinders and whether I'm doing right fitting a 20.6mms bore unit to my 1.6gti? My intention was to stay original and I'm guessing I may experience a shorter brake pedal travel with the cylinder I've bought? And a firmer push on the pedal required for the same level of braking? Thanks in advance for any help, Pete
  2. I am (very) slowly replacing the head gasket in my 1.9 after it corroded due to lack of use. I removed all the valves and valve stem oil seals tonight and then noticed some pitting around the cylinders. The worst area is near the 4th cylinder, it is around 1.5mm from the edge of the combustion chamber and around 5mm in diameter and around 2 to 3mm deep. I am planning to have the head skimmed to clean it up, is this something that can be welded up first by a machine shop? Thanks Rob
  3. Good day all. As per the topic title, I would like to know what are the differences of the rear brakes for Lucas vs Bendix vs Girling. For example if I was replacing all the parts regarding the rear brakes (Drum Type), does it matter if I use Lucas vs Bendix vs Girling, as I would be replacing the brake wheel cylinder, brake shoes, etc. And is there any pro's and con's from said makes, besides the prices. Thanks for your time. Best Regards.
