309 Wishbones With 205 Driveshafts

Im going to widen the front track of my 205, but does using 309 wishbones mean I need to use 309 driveshafts aswell? or is there enough thread on the end of the shaft to take up the extra width from the 309 wishbones?

Been asked many times! It depends, some people get on fine with the 205 shafts but other people find the 205 shafts pop out, i think it depends on how lowered your car is aswell. I personally would use 309 shafts.

there are quite a few topics about this.

Some tend to go OK with 205 shafts...while some users have reported that this is not exactly the case.

I am going to try this with 205 shafts, as I have nearly new ones, and finding 309 ones here is not an easy task.

Should also look in the option of inserting a 2mm washer between the shaft and the bearing to remedy the problem a little.

I have 205 shafts and have had no problems, lowered 40mm.

Will get 309 ones though when they need changing.

My car is quite low (40mm+), and im using 205 shafts no problems with the 309 wishbones. Ive got a diff in mine too so the whole drivetrain takes alot of punishment. Alot of shafts are different though so best advice is to just try it and see...

its only 10mm wider each side IIRC, and the strut tops stay in the same place so its effectively even less.

yeah its 10mm at the ball joint, so will be slightly less by the time you get to the cv.

 

add me to the list of successful 205 shaft and 309 wishbone users, done it on two different cars now without problems

I think it really depends on your application, use and how much you abuse the steering really. I ran 205 shafts with big camber wishbones with standard top mounts for a while and kept breaking shafts, however when I changed to camber adjustable top mounts I could dial the correction for the angle of the shocks back in.

 

I would recommend using 309 shafts though, just for piece of mind, shafts really hate being used on the extent of their movement, but this only happens on quite a lot of lock.
