davemar 16 Posted December 29, 2008 I was driving my 205 Mi16 with a 1.9 BE1 gearbox yesterday on a longish drive. A few of times it popped out of gear, a couple of times in 3rd, and once in 5th. On all occasions I was applying a reasonable amount of throttle. It's never done this before (I've been on this gearbox for about 10 years, and 100k miles, so it's not young), but the gear change has always felts good and taught. Is my box on the way out, or is it something else that could be causing it such as failing engine mounts? Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Tom Fenton 1,541 Posted December 29, 2008 Check your engine mounts, then check all your gear linkages are free to move. My track car started popping out of gear, but it turned out to be the bushes on the pivot on the subframe had gone stiff. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

davemar 16 Posted December 30, 2008 Years ago I had a Fiesta that kept popping out of 5th which was also a worn synchro. That was easy to change as it was at the end of the box, so just needed the end cap removing. As my Pug popped out of both 3rd and 5th I'm assuming it's not a synchro, as that would be too coincidental. When the weather gets back above zero, I'll check the pivots. There didn't seem to be any over-flexing on the engine, so I think the mounts are OK. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Removed the level-check bolt and started to fill her up. 1.5 litres later, the level-check hole started to dribble. So the gearbox was as dry as Martina Navratilova after Timmy Mallet's Chippendale routine. Haven't taken her out for a spin yet, lets hope this sorts the problem. Hopefully, but if you have been driving with no oil, things will have got very warm, didn't you notice the gears hard to change/engage? And didn't it make a noise? davemar 16 Posted December 31, 2008 The gear changes seemed OK, just the rare crunch into 2nd. As for noises, I can't say I really noticed anything, but engine/road/wind/radio/SWMBO yapping noise all kind of mask out a lot of stuff. You don't tend to notice noises that gradually change, so maybe this oil refill will make the noise I haven't noticed drop and I will hear a difference.
