[rally_prep] 205 Mi16 Road Rally Car

Recommended Posts

seens as im going to be doing a load of work to my car i thought i might as well make a project thread out of it! and it saves me clogging up the the forum with posts i can just keep it all in 1 place!

im half way through it now so il start with what i can think of from the top of my head.

i was originally going to use my black 205 but after closer inspection it turned out to rusty to be used so its now a donor for spares (and funds) to my red 205.

i bought it as a 1.9 gti had a few months fun out of it,then the water pump gave up :) but lukily at the same time a 405 mi16 came up for sale up the road so bought it quickly.i thought why bother going to the hassle of changing the pump? might as well just stick the mi in!

it went in easily enough, just bashed back the bulk head and dropped it in. i tried making a link loom but did'nt have much luck with that so gave in and bought a custom loom from pr developemens. after a bit of wasted time through moving house i managed to get back to playing with it,changed the starter, fresh petrol and it started! but not since tho but il get back to that later.

post-13260-1230412090_thumb.jpg

how it started (always hated the grill)

post-13260-1230412152_thumb.jpg

the donor (my favourate shame i cant weld :) )

the black car had a omp roll cage which im in the process of fitting in the red car,i have some buckets and harnesses i got a few years back which might be going in unless i get some new 1s.

things i need to do are

incar lines, change the suspension so its not so low,buy and fit some guards, spots, map lights, change from the big stainless system, get it running!,fit the rad,fit the 1.6 box, weld the cage mounts loads more stufff il just keep adding to this as i do it and hopefully it might be of some help to others who also want to do the same thing.more pics to come soon!

any tips or sugestions much appreciated coments good or bad and feel free to ask any questions

attachment=6321:Mi2day.JPG]post-13260-1230743329_thumb.jpghow it is today

i fitted the front of the cage, removed the fogs (saves them being smashed)done a bit of tidying in the engine bay, took of the strut brace and tried the mi wheels but i wont be using these, prob white 1.9 wheels or maybe use the comps not sure yet!

need to sort out where to fit the washer bottle? been thinking about fitting it in the scuttle but looking for sugestions? iv got myself a qep manifold blate to give me better exhaust/bulkhead clearence as its very close at the moment!

the front is way to low so iv got some -20mm springs to try for now just to get started with.

changed the gril to my sare black 1 and i think it looks good! not gonna bother spraying it!

took of the boy racer led side repeaters and stuck a pair of standard 1s back on. gonna have the cage mounts welded in soon and iv got a mate to come up fri to try get it running!

done some shopping today  sold my mi wheels so put the tyres on the comps and i love them! bought some bonnet pins, battery issolater and harness bolts just got to find time to fit them now, got to change the gearbox tomorow aswell but thats not to bed. iv struck a deal on some 1.6 wheels and rally tyres to so cant wait to pick them up, and had a mate have a look at the starting problems and he thinks its the alarm,so hel be taking it away in the next few weeks and when i get it back itl be running big yay! then its going straight to have the cage welded in  not sure whether to use my seats or not as i dont think they will be very comfy on bumpy roads, but theyl do until i find a set of replacements! now then, if any bodys got any advice on fitting the harness bolts and battery cut off switch feel free to let me know

You'll find that battery isolator won't stop the engine from running, in fact all it will do is damage the alternator if you try to stop the engine with it. Ideally you want a proper FIA one with the extra pins and a ballast resistor so the engine is cut out and the alternator is protected.

so should i take this 1 back and get a proper 1? i thought when i got home it looked a bit weedy! are they comlicated to fit or quite stright forward? cheers for the info, glad i havent opened it yet!

I would take it back, yes.

You want one that looks like this:

The extra pins and the big white resistor are the things to look for. They come with decent instructions so you'll be fine fitting it.

looking good mate! got to agree those compo's look good! might look better on my 309 though  haha

just out of interest, what would the other connections on the fia killswitch be connected to? the large two, i guess, is wires inline with the positive batt cable.

Im now the proud owner of a pair of sparco pro 2000 seats,6 point willans harnesses and alloy side mounts ;) pics tommorow. after getting bored of mangling my manifold nuts today, i decided to pull out the front half of my cage and removed the carpet ready for the cage mounts. removed all the floor underlay and was supprised by how much it actually weighs! and it was nice not to find rot any where, unlike my black one! fitted the eye bolts to inside the sills and rear anchor points.completely removed the front seat belts, and gave the front cage a fresh coat of white paint to freshen it up.looks much better now! also got a fuel banjo of miles through the post today which fits the fuel pipe perfectly, gives me a better peice of mind knowing the pipes not going to come bursting of splurting petrol all over the engine bay.money well spent i think!

Since this topic is in Members Works section, don't you think the last page of posts was a waste of our time? That's what PMs are for :)

Can we have a proper update now? :)

Can we have a proper update now? :P

ok that is a bit of a wate of time so lets ignore that last page :)

now then update time.

iv fitted the 1.6 gear box to it now after giving it a good clean, along with the quick shift linkage off the other car.need to have a play with the linkages now as it wont select the top gears, but because it was snowing i didnt have the patience for that!once that is sorted i shall lock wire them as per prc build guide, and while im doing that i shall lock wire the rear pads to.also need to fit a 1.6 clutch pedal to go with the new clutch cable i have.

i had no luck with the exhaust manifold nuts,so i just bolted the rest back on and will do it once its running! i think its better that way, so i can drive it somewhere with a mig to weld some extra nuts on at a later date!but if the bulkhead clearance is not a issue, i will prob end up selling the angling plate as i think it will push the downpipe further towards the ground.

im going to junk the big stainless exhaust system in favour of a 309 center section i have,i beleive its a sportex mild steel system, which i think it would be better due to the box being a lot slimmer and will fit snugly into the exhaust tunnel.just need a rear box then, possibly a standard item if it will fit onto the bore of the center section.in the long run though, i want a group n system from peter lloyd rallying, but that can wait as im doing this car on a budget.

work might be a bit slow now though because i managed to ruin my knee skiing, but i shall update pics of the car today hopefully :D

got some spax adjustable front shocks today,in exchange for the stainless system i had on which was to big for my intended use any way so bargain i beleive! any one use these shocks, recomend them or not? and is there a way of testing them? theres no signs of leaking and look pretty new.

still on the lookout for a clutch pedal, and need to stop being lazy and put the shafts back in so i can give it another try starting, but i doubt id be that lucky for it to start!

progress has been slow due to the bloody cold weather and lack of garage! but now its all back together and looking complete again. had some good news also, its getting picked up on the weekend for the electrics to be sorted to get it running reliably yay!

been pilling up some parts for it also, got some group n top mount rubbers to go on the spax shocks i got,got my self a alloy sump guard for a bargain £30! its second hand but unused, need to make the mounts for it but il wait till its running for that.

im going to be fitting 309 bottom arms for a bit of negative camber with fresh bush's along with 180lb tarmac springs from peter lloyd and new top mount bearings of a berlingo (as recomended, cheers!) i think it should handle really well!

still on the list of things to get is a tank guard, but im considering making this if poss unless i find a good bargain! also before i rally it i need to run all the lines inside the car for safety, its getting closer to completion now cant wait to use it summer time!

pics to come before it go's,just hope its not gone for too long.

Whats the advantage with Berlingo top mount bearings?

i was recomended to ordef these from gsf as the brand is skf which is better than what they stock for the 205 . i would expect them to be slightly more robust due to the extra weight of the berlingo, and as they are a similar price they've got to be worth a try!

No advantage, same part, just that they're sold seperately.

i got a price of £15 for a top mount set for a 205, or £33 for berlingo, so im gonna get the 205 ones now as they are half the price, and better than the old ones!

ordered some tarmac springs today so they'l be ready to assemble the strut.

my car got taken away on saturday and im gutted its gone, but atleast it will be running next time i see it! just hope its not gone for too long.
