bensonmi 4 2 Cars Posted December 20, 2008 which plug? theres so many to pick from.... oh and the fan is still going if im remembering right, its a thick grey plug with 2 thick wires going in, on the right hand side of the fan as you face the car, might be an idea to just disconect the bat for now while you try find the plug! damien 22 1 Cars Posted December 20, 2008 just unplugged the battery, much quicker had a search but all i can find is people having problems with fans not turning on nothing on fans not turning off
welshpug 1,657 Posted December 20, 2008 tis a pretty simple system consisting of a permanent live from the shunt box bolted to the slam panel, a thermoswitch screwed into the rad on the left hand side of the car (from P1.5 on, its on the right on early cars) and a low speed resistor that should be clipped to the top of the rad, but often just dangling in space. (and also a diagnostic plug, but I've never given this much attention as its just as easy to check the plugs and components themselves) first thing to check would be the condition of the wiring, may be a short in it, then the thermoswitch. damien 22 1 Cars Posted December 20, 2008 if it was the thermoswitch playing up do i need to drain the rad to change it?
welshpug 1,657 Posted December 20, 2008 no need to drain the rad, but you will lose about half the coolant from it when you remove it. best bet is to release the pressure by opening the expansion tank cap, and then close it back up, that will ensure you lose the least amount of coolant possible. if its fairly fresh and clean re-use it, if its not its probably worth pulling the hose off the end of thr rad and using this opportunity to stick fresh in. damien 22 1 Cars Posted December 20, 2008 ok ive had a poke around and it seems like the thermoswitch is playing up as the fan turns off/on when i wiggle the wiring in the back of it, ive unplugged it for now until i get a replacment, is it still ok to use the car or am i asking for problems? as its getting closer to xmas more places are going to be closed. also ive had a search on the forum and there seems to be loads of different types of thermoswitches (switch temps), how do i know which one i need? is there a difference between the ph1/ph1.5/ph2? welshpug 1,657 Posted December 20, 2008 there are different pin arrangements and some different switching temperatures along the years. pins are normally either arranged in a | | | or |_| with an appropriate plug.
CosKev 16 Posted December 20, 2008 , is it still ok to use the car or am i asking for problems? Asking for trouble if you get stuck in any traffic/get engine hot! I would check the connections on the thermo switch, for corrosion and damp,if its wet in the wiring plug it could be earthing from one terminal to the other
damien 22 1 Cars Posted December 21, 2008 removed the plug today and its a blue 3 pins in a row like this - - - , there was loads of corrosion and it seemed damp so im guessing it got wet and shorted out. just got to fine a replacment
