Sump Gasket Query

Recommended Posts

Stephen W

Hi i have a large leak from the sump on my 89 1.9 gti, and before i take the sump off can any one tell me what type of gasket they use? Is it a rubber one or cork, or just sealant?

All help very appreciated.

either sealant or a multi layer paper one, there's also a stiffener on the bottom of the engine that's sealed with sealant.

yep thick paper type...not to expensive......you also want some sealent.......between spacer and block.........gasket is for between spacer and sump ;-)

some people just use sealent for both....but i say why make a gasket if not needed????

The rule is, Alloy sump's are sealent, Tin sumps use a gasket. Worth using a OE Pug gasket too as the pattern ones are not very good

part number is 0304 34, £9.29 from Pug.

I do remember GSF listing them as they fit all XU engines, but I don't know what brand they do, Meillor is the original ones.

Personally I use two, one for the sump > spacer and one for the spacer > block. Just need to punch 2 holes for the locating dowls for the latter. I dont like the thought of squeezed out sealent breaking off and getting sucked up by the oil pump and blocking the stainer. But thats my opinion only.
