philfingers 5 Posted December 14, 2008 how easy is this to do, to change an auto 1900 gti into a manual. Seeing as I have all the kit about, box, clutch, flywheel, linkages, levers etc is it straightforward. I presume 1900 Auto's are full 130bhp spec as per all pre cats? welshpug 1,657 Posted December 15, 2008 I thought the Auto's were 105 bhp low comp engineslike the CTi's, not 122 or 128bhp.
Tesstuff 222 Posted December 15, 2008 The 205 and 309 GTi auto's were both the same spec engine and definitely not the 105 bhp Gentry/Cti jobbie. They could hardly be called GTi's with that could they But then most will say they could hardly be called GTi's with an auto
philfingers 5 Posted December 15, 2008 any idea what's involved with changing to manual? just remind me what should the engine code be for a 130hp 8v? Phil
Batfink 201 Posted December 15, 2008 off the top of my head, you can mount the L-bracket onto the auto subframe, you need to remove the heat shield as they are different, the gearlever hole is all there so switch that all over to the manual stuff and swap the console panels to the manual ones too. You need a clutch pedal and cable. Thats about it I think, cant remember finding anything else dramatic to fit

philfingers 5 Posted December 15, 2008 The Gti auto's did use this engine, as found in the Gentry and CTi Ah not so much a good buy then. I have a 1900 HC engine but can't be arsed changing that and the box, tho saying that it wouldn't be a big job on hindsight.
Tesstuff 222 Posted December 15, 2008 You only have to change a couple of items and you have 95% of the difference sorted.(getting the power from 105 up around 120) Miles has done it to his Gentry.
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted December 15, 2008 You need to connect the starter inhibbit wires or trace them back or she won;t start, add reversing light's if you wish, but it's all easy
philfingers 5 Posted December 15, 2008 what's the deal with the engine then, does it need a complete 8v HC motor (130) and ECU. Any thing else which would need to be changed? I'm sure i have it all in my spares mountain! Phil
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted December 15, 2008 If your swaping engine's then like any engine swap, you need everything for that engine, If staying Auto just don;t use Jetronic or it will never tick over

welshpug 1,657 Posted December 16, 2008 D6B is the 128 bhp 8valver, check the code on the tag by the engine mounting.
Super Josh 4 Posted December 16, 2008 You need to connect the starter inhibbit wires or trace them back or she won;t start, add reversing light's if you wish, but it's all easy This bit is easy, as it is controlled by a relay in the black plastic relay box on the passenger side strut top. Just cut the two wires that are switched by the relay and join them together Josh
