Hi all, I'm new on here and have just bought a 205 mi16, it was supposed to be a run around for a couple of weeks til I can get my capri back on the road and then be a weekend car however on my drive back from Wirral it went pop. Quite blatantly the head gasket, oil turned to sludge and all the water that was in it gone...Awesome...700 notes of broken car at the side of the road, and a seller who wasn't too friendly when I phoned to tell him about my problem, only wanted a hand getting it moved somewhere off the main road and I knew he had a truck, oh well. So now the 205 is in the garage and has become another project car.

I have a few questions about the car:

The BX Gti and 405 Mi16 engines were the same lump weren't they, as the engine in it is from a BX Gti?

Anybody know the best place to get a gasket set from?

Is there anything else I should think about doing to the engine when I lift it from the car?

Also would people recommend untilting the engine, I have read about possible oil starvation and driveshaft wear, but is this mainly if it gets driven very hard?

Any help would be greatly appriciated, I'm not too novice when it comes to cars but tend to prefer carbs over injection etc....I'm a bit simple

cheers

Jay

i think there are a few variations of the mi16 lump

ie, model numbers (D6C) and sizes (1.9 and 2.0)

GSF or any motorfactors will supply headgaskets. (its worth doing the belt and tensioners too if your unsure of age)

If your taking the engine out of the car, then check the big end bearings. even though the engine may look tilted, it may not be, check first to be sure, but yes in my opnion, it is worth taking the effort to untilt it if it is. most likely to affect you more if driven hard, especially arroudn corners.

sorry to hear about your misfortune mate, the seller sounds like abit of a wanker. , but welcome to the forum anyhow.

the bx and 405 had the same engine. there should be a metal plate on the engine stamped with something like d6c. this is the engine code you should quote when ordering your bits.

i would look at doing the waterpump and cambelt and tensioners plus all the top end gaskets and stem seals while its apart.

if theres no visible failure sign on the headgasket, the head should be pressure tested and skimmed at the very least. the engine doesnt have to be removed to do the gasket, but its quite tight for space in there. the engines are cantered back 30 degrees from the factory, if they have been tilted even more the tell tale sign is the bottom engine mount fork is usually lengthened.

if you do decide to lift the engine, check the clutch, much easier to do when its out, and it may even pay to check the bottom end for a clean bill of health.

As said checking the head is a must, Corrosion is getting very common now and unless the heads are welded and skimmed they are scrap, also the liner top's can be a issue too, Sorry to be all dome and glom.

A gasket set from GSF is about £85.00, as is the Cambelt kit with the pump around £25.00
