I might be talking c**p but didn't think you were allowed 16v cars in road rallying?

Haven't done any for a couple of years but seem to remember I could only use an Mi16 on 12cars rather than road rallies.

As has been said before there isn't a lot to do in order to get out there, have a go and see if you enjoy it. Do a few events, change a few components between and if after a while it's what you want to do, then get on and prep a car properly.

We've won events in the past in std road cars, as said it's all about the navigation.

Good luck but as Slippy say's you'll end up wanting to go staging and then it will take over your life and you're financially fu**ed!

The rules changed a couple of years ago James . typically just after I'd spent my money on getting the 8V to a reasonable road rally spec.

You're dead right about the stages though !!!

Why does tha not surprise me! No doubt some bright spark at the msa decided it was a sensible idea to change the rules - just like they did to us with the rally car after we got a turbo lump sorted, only for them to then ban non oe turbo cars doh!

yes you need a non race national b licence from the msa.

you can now fit any 16v engine from any car so long as it uses the original inlet manifold and plenum fitted to the engine as std.

The idea behind it was to allow more powerful but quieter engines. Which doesn't explain why they banned turbos, including diesels- go figure!

I'm in the middle of an Mi install in mine. 160hp std, you would struggle to get that from a 8v without carbs or TBs.

I'd go for a Mi16 CWP in a 1900 box. Forget the std 1900 box, it's no good. 1600 box is ok a cheap/ easy compronmise. Mine will have a 4.8 in it, when I've rebuilt it.

If I were you I'd put a decent box and guards on the Mi you have and use it. As long as it's not dangerously rusty then you've nothing to loose. At leats you know the car

Hello everyone.

Im looking at doing the same thing in the new year. Im picking up a 1.9 gti at the weekend. Getting sump and tank guards from Peter Lloyd and then im getting out there as soon as I can.

I used to do 12 car events up in the midlands but they seem a bit tame compared to welsh road rallying!

Have a look on the Teifi valley mc site. They're not far from you and they have a really good guide to road ralling.

Heres the link. http://www.teifivalleymotorclub.co.uk/rally_info.php

I don't know if im allowed to post links so mods feel free to remove it if not.

how do i go about getting the liscence and is that expensive?

iv got a 1600 box spare on my other 1 fitting that wont be a problem,iv found some second hand guards close by just tryin to convince my bird she should get me them for xmas!

the 1 i will be using will be my red rust free mi now instead of the black 1 i initially thought id use as it still has the 1.9 beam and the interior still intact.be fitting the cage into it on my time of. i need to raise the front up abit as its very low at the mo but there is not much work needed to get it road worthy and its better as its using the full mi 3 row management, just need to fix the thing thats stopping it running.i think its an imobiliser problem now but got some1 coming to sort it for me once he gets time.cant wait!!

If you are saying this due to their website page that specifies technical regulation for road rally cars, then you are wrong.

The rules they are quoting (along with Blue Book refs) are out of date. Events running on road rally permits, eg Teifi Valleys Bro Presli and Cliwendeg rallies, don't have a standard production class, turbos are not allowed, 16vs are allowed (see previous posts for eligiblity requirements) and more than 4 cylinders is still not allowed.

They have a very strong road rally scene but from a quick look at the website, not much has been updated since 2006. I am sure some of their road rally competitors are running 16vs and if it is a local club, a good choice for anyone wanting to start road rallying (8v or 16v).

i am joining teifi valley motor club now! in the process of filling in the forms, theres a novice rally in feb ,rally bro preseli, which with any luck id like to enter as its a club only event and no need for a msa liscence so ideal for me to start and to see what else i should do or dont to my car.

the web page, even tho its out of date has a hell of a lot of usefull info i didnt know about, especially about the navigation alot better than other club sites iv looked at!

got the spare mi out the black 1 today to start the ball rolling!

Welshpug.........let me inform you that Teifi Valley Motor Club DOES NOT HAVE A PROBLEM with people running 16v engines in cars as long as they comply with the MSA Blue Book (i.e. running on standard injection systems)

This has been the case since the rule was brought in during 2006........in fact, on the Cilwendeg Rally in 2006, the car that was leading the event until an electrical problem put it out of the rally was a MK2 Escort with a Honda S2000 engine fitted in it.

Since then, they've had Escorts with Astra 16v engines in and 205 MI16's on every event that they've run.

As for anything over 4 cylinders or turbo charged......well that is not down to ANY club. That was a rule brought in by the MSA in January 2007, when they banned all Scooby's, Evo's, Sierra 4x4 V6's etc. B)

SPGTI..............You are spot on :D Teifi Valley's website has'nt been updated much since 2006 for the simple reason that the club's secretery recieved an e-mail from the Police asking on which websites the club's events were promoted. That's the reason the forum section on the website has gone!!!!! The Police and MSA use forum's as evidence, and look for photos showing road signs, white lines / road markings and poeple talking about speed / skiding / drifting etc, so it was easier to pull the forum than to keep checking it !! Another No NO is posting road rally videos on You Tube - cops and the MSA love them as evidence, and every video they find is another nail in the road rally coffin

As for a strong road rally scene.............you could say that ;)

The club has over 350 members - 220 of them competed in the Club's Road Rally Championship this year. In comparison, only 95 people in the whole of the UK did the Welsh Road Rally Championship!!!!!
