Earth Points

Recommended Posts

RINRIN

Hi,

I swear that I made a search before this topic :P

In my search I realized that the earth points are talked but not clarified,

I also look to the manuals,

I have nearly 2 ohms between the battery negative cable and a good earth point :)

Where are the all earth points on the car,

Can someone who is experienced, explain where they are? :D

I thought the Haynes Manual listed the earth locations, but I can't find it!

The ones I know of are;

2 on the Headlamp panel, one either side of the radiator.

Transmission - battery - Coil plate, where the loom from the fusebox has an earth that connects there.

Steering Column bracket under the dash.

IIRC there is one near the left hand rear light cluster.

Sure i saw the one your on about at the rear lights the other week welshpug. Same as the front headlight panel ones iirc.

Theres earths on the shock tops too. But id guess most have been removed / lost by now.

Ive added some extra earths on mine when i had it all apart last.

Its worth redoing all the main power / earth cables imo. Its not overly exspensive and easy enough to do.

As a conclusion can we say that we have the earth points on

2 on shock absorbers left and right

2 on headlight panel left and right

1 on transmission

1 on battery negative lead

1 on ignition coil plate

1 on steering column

1 on rear left light cluster,

Thanks for reply, now it is time to find them

the ones on the damper tops aren't earth's as such, thy are simply the continuation of the brake pad warning light circuit.

How is that not an earth? They have a very specific function but they are most definitely earths, as you say they are "the continuation of the brake pad warning light circuit" to earth.

if you look at it that way every single negative connection on the vehicle is an "earth" though most are not.

the OP was asking specifically about Earth points.

What?

the OP was asking specifically about Earth points.

I think you have confused yourself, if its not an earth what is it? What makes it different to any other earth?

The strut is electrically insulated from the body by rubber mounts, as is the engine. The strut has an earth strap to complete an electrical circuit, as has the engine. So what is the difference?

what do you say to this,

The resistance value between the battery negative cable and shock absorber top is 2 ohms :)
