Is It Possible To Find A Good Garage These Days?

Recommended Posts

Well its been a pretty expensive week for the 205.

First of all it failed the mot on two flexis and a cv boot, Not to bad i thought.

Then a water leak appered from the water pump. So i booked it all in to be fixed at the cost of £330. I went to pick the car up saturday morning and the mechanic advises me theres an oil leak but he cant trace it, Now i've never had to put any oil in since owning it from jan 08 and there has never been any sign of oil on the drive so i knew there was no leak, He informed me they had cleaned of the engine to see if they could trace it but with no luck. I checked the drive this morning and theres some drops in a few different places.

I find it very hard to belive that i can drop my car of with no evidence at all of any oil leak then to pick it up the next day with what seems three leaks?!?!

I dont no wheter to go back and complain but what do you say? I've no evidence of them causing the leak. Is it possible it could be just dripping of the block from when they steam cleaned the engine?

The garage has always been really good in the past but i think they've had a change of staff, I got a few pointless advisories which seemed petty to me.

Opinions welcome.

Chris

which CV boots did they replace and how?

if they removed the shafts to fix the boots its likely that they have not replaced the driveshaft seals in the diff housing, this can cause leaks.

also if they did remove the shafts make sure they used the correct 75W80 grade oil.

Just the passenger side outer cv boot welshpug.

These seals where brand new pug items about three months ago. It seems to be coming from the engine side of the bay if you no what i mean.

they would not realy have caused the leak by doing water pump, the leak may have just started, an oil leak has to start sometime

3 seperate drips doesnt mean 3 leaks. Its possible its one leak, spreading and dripping from 3 points.

As said, leaks have to start sometime. Changing water pump doesnt require anything apart oil wise. Its possible the diff seals are leaking since shafts been out. But you say its more engine side. Sumps are notourious.

Not many cars have no leaks at all. My sump refuses to seal at the mo. 3 seperate times ive done it, and it still seeps eventually. But it never leaves patches, as its only seeping.

Best bet would be to jack it up, so you can see for yourself the area. But in short, unless the garage removed a part that carries oil, they didnt cause the leak.

Presume that price for water pump included cam belt and tensioner???????

Only seal that could have ben damaged/disturbed when changing belt is the crank shaft seal, but they should not have touched it really, but you never know

Theyd have to be a complete clown to wreck a crank seal while doing a waterpump

Good luck with sorting it out mate. And chin up...mine is a never ending list of things to do. For every 1 i tick off, i add 2 more

I wouldn't lose sleep over 'a few drips'. If it's easily fixable then crack on, but it's not the end of the world. Having oil literally pissing out of your oil pressure switch on the other hand, now that's pretty annoying

Thanks for the positive comments guys.

GLP:- I've been there with my 1.6 before now

But your rite its not the end of the world and the improved running off the car does make up for at least one of the drips ;)

Agreed, but if hes sure there was no oil leak before the car went in its the only oil seal/gasket they would have been near changing cam belt ;)

What condition was it in underneath before? sometimes an oil leak can be masked/soaked up by a layer of road grime/general crud underneath the car. It might have looked "wet" so the garage cleaned it up which makes the leak appear worse as it drips more readily on the floor.
