Mi16 Gearbox ,which Is Best?

Recommended Posts

changingman

Hi,ive an MI16 which keeps munching driveshafts and although 2 new ones were put in last week it still vibrates when turning left.

I assume its the diff so will replace the box.

The cars runs approx 192 bhp ,has been cammed and is currently on a 1.6 box,but cant be 100% sure of the box.

It is a track toy and i wondered what is the strongest box to replace it with as it never gets driven slowly except when being loaded on the truck!!

Thanks

Liam

All the boxes are the same, It's a mith that some and stronger than others internally, Yes the Diff on the late BE3's changed but this never addressed the issue of the sun & Plant gears going AWOL, The MI16 and TD boxes use a more riged case with extra rib's and depending on year various Diff cover design's

Is the Mi at the right angle mate?

I know its a silly question, but having seen first hand just what a stupid angle titled Mi driveshafts run, it defies belief that people still do it this way...

Im running 309 shafts (and bottom arms) and a 1600 box on mine btw.

Right,i cant think off the top of my head about the angle but im sure its tilted, ive half a dozen track toys and remembering what has been done to what sometimes gets the better of me!!!!

Are 309 shafts longer then ??

If you want a stronger box one option is to get the casing machined for a larger bearing on the end of the mainshaft, as the torque of a gruntier motor typically makes them fail at this point, splitting the casing. AB Motorsport know all about this very well, after trashing many boxes, Andy can now build you a box with the mod. Got one myself - no way I'm running my mi16 without it!

If its tilted mate id look at addressing that first, you'll probably find the shafts will last a fair bit longer!

Yeah 309 shafts are longer, they're needed as im running 309 bottom arms for a bit of negative camber.

All very well having the larger bearing on the input shaft but the case split's between both bearing's then as they are too close together (Hvae a few here), I have seen more problems with that than the earlier one's to date.

As for replacing a box make sure it's off a Mi16 or 1.6, any other and performace will suffer as it will be too long legged, The amount of boxes I get from people saying it's from a GTi and 80% of the time it turns out to be a Derv one!!
