Best People For Sandblasting And Painting Bonnet!

Just bought a 205 Auto bonnet with the 'power buldge', but unfortunately its red; and the car is black. Had a crack with the nito-mors on stripping the bugger, but its taken tons of stripper to get the paint off down to bare metal... Looking at the underside, I dread to think how long this is gonna take.

 

Are there any decent paint shops around the Surrey area who can do this for me? Or anyone out there like doing this stuff for a drink? I just cant be arsed anymore.

Hm, why did you want to take it down to bare metal in the first place?

 

My experience says that you will never get the same rust protection on the bonnet as the orginial protection from factory.

the easiest thing to do would have been just to paint the bonnet, there's no need to start stripping paint or sand blasting the thing! :D

I thought they'd take the paint off a least a little or else its a cheap and nasty job? I was under the impression that to paint something you need to rough the surface up a little, primer and then spray.

 

 

I don't think I could ever bring myself to just spray directly over old paint!

sorry thats what I meant, obviously you'd sand it back to get the paint to bite but if the surface is good you can paint over the old paint and just prime any repairs that are done.

 

i'm sure there will be a member who is a painter/bodyworker along soon, as i'm not one but my dad is :D

You got to take at least some paint off the thing before re-painting. I never intended on stripping the whole thing down to the metal originally, but i did me wheels like that and they turned out perfect... Each to their own i guess. The real problem is sanding the inner side of the bonnet as its covered in inner support beams and the like - a nighmare even to sand softly. The damn laquer is the main problem - its so damn hard to get off even with paint stripper.

Considering the top is now half bare-to-metal Ive gotta go the whole hog now and sandblast the entire thing.

Don't be sandblasting the bonnet! Thats the worst thing you can do. It will be rippled stupid. You can soda blast body panels alright, but using sand isn't a good idea. Get a decent bodyshop to sort it out for you.

soda blasting is the way 2 go takes all the paint down to bear metal without damaging the metal shud cost about 40quid and some places come to u

On the inside of the bonnet you should use a rubbing pad and just give the surfaces a light rub. I can't understand why you wanna remove the laquer?

 

Old paint is excellent base for new paint as long as it's rubbed a littlebit and degreased properly.

I'd agree with this. Providing the original paint is sound, it's an excellent base for painting over, just sand it or roughen it up with an abrasive pad (like Scotchbrite or Mirlon) to give a good key for the new paint to adhere to.

 

I'd also agree with the sandblasting comments. The thin metal of the bonnet is very likely to warp with this process.

 

But since you've started to remove the paint on the outside, you're going to have to finish it off as you say. Try sanding the paint well with a rough grit of paper (40 or 80 grit) before applying the stripper. It'll help it to penetrate down to the lower layers.

I work in a bodyshop and the only time we bare metal is if the panel has been vandalised with paint stripper/brake fluid etc...

 

As said factory paint is an exellent base if prepped propley, so even when we fit seccy hand pannels in completely the wrong colour they are not bare metal'ed. As paint guy said now you have started you may as well finish!

 

Buy a can of cavity wax for the underside strengthining bits, should hold off the rust :)

Ended up finishing removing the paint off the top side of the bonnet (too late to go back now) and lightly sanded the entire bottom half. Ill post some pics for anyone who want to see me make a mess of the fcuking job... :ph34r:
