Spraying Metallic Paint

Recommended Posts

Guest ellisg

Anybody got any guides on spraying metallic paint.

I've only done solid paint and was complete car, some years ago.

Have bare panel (wing) and few repairs to do near to wing.

What type of primer/paint/lacquer is used?

How to prepare area that gets blow in to match the metallic?

How much does it cost for materials? Any ideas?

OK, if u are using a compressor and psray gun then i would use the follwing system:

2K primer (high build if you are unsure of any repairs), (will need thinning and activator)

Metallic Base Coat (Thin 1:1 with basecoat thinners),

2K Clear Lacquer (Thin as required and activator)

Prepare the wing and finish with something like 400 grit, panel wipe and tack rag. Give a couple of coats of primer, allow to harden fully then wet flat with 600 grit. Panel wipe and tack rag.

Apply basecoat, 2-3 coats until good coverage, allow to flash-off between coats. Once touch dry, Do NOT panel wipe as basecoat is very thin, lightly tack rag off any overspray.

Apply 2-3 (possibly 4) coats of lacquer and leave to fully cure, at least 24 hours. If you feel necessary you can cut the paint after about a week, or you can wet flat with 1500 and buff for super shiny finish.

As for blow ins on repairs, you will need to prep the area with say 600 grit wet. Blow in the base coat up to masking tape on first coat, remove masking and feather edges in. Not too many coats with basecoat. Lacquer area again fading out at edges. It is then best to use fade out thinners to blend the area in. Again, once hardended the pait may be cut to suit.

The above for the blow in is only a guide as i am not 100% on best method for it.

Yes, I would be using compressor and spray gun

What I've seen of prices, I believe looking at £100 just for paint/thinners/clearcoat/hardeners. WHere is the best place to go for paint, been looking at http://www.bodyshopwarehouse.co.uk/.

Bodyshop is not going to charge much, maybe better for pros to do.

Well u'd only need 1 litre of basecoat @ about £18 litre (might be able to do with 1/2 depending on other repairs),

basecoat thinners @ about £15 5 litres

1 litre Primer @ about £15 a litre

1 litre of Lacquer @ about £20 litre

then 2K thinners and activator will prob be another £20 - £30,

so all in about £100 but prices are estimates and you would have apint left over by above so if u needed to do anymore down the line it would be OK.

I usually get paint from PartCo.

I reckon b/shop would charge more than £100.
