damo 17 2 Cars Posted November 29, 2008 I have a 1.9 engine on a TD gear box. i'm thinking of getting a 1.6 gti box. whats the differece as the ratios look the same for 1st and 2nd? or am i missing something / being stupid!
welshpug 1,657 Posted November 29, 2008 (edited) ideally you want a 1.9 box, the TD box will be far too low. why is this in the TU section? Edited November 29, 2008 by welshpug
bensonmi 4 2 Cars Posted November 29, 2008 mi16 box! had really good accelaration with one on a 1.9 b efore but not the best top speed but who cares about that when your bombing down backlanes!
dirtdog 4 Posted November 29, 2008 I'd personally get rid of the diesel box and fit a 1.6box with flywheel
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted November 29, 2008 Derv box's are for Derv's with a max rev limit of 4800 ish, Fit a 1.6 box etc and you'll get a shock on how fast it goes
ledders 1 Posted December 3, 2008 Take miles's advice for some v.strange reason I had a 205 diesel gearbox on my 1.9 which resulted in 1 being useless and 2nd not much better however when third got going it was amazing!!..
Rom 0 Posted December 3, 2008 Derv box is evil. Get either a 1.6 or an Mi box on there. 1.9 boxes are a bit long imo. Be warned though, 1.6 / Mi will be revvier, but a lot more fun on anything but motorway journeys
damo 17 2 Cars Posted December 13, 2008 thx for the help. so with motorways, could i use the 5th from the td box? or is this a lot of work?
rapidcossie 0 Posted December 13, 2008 Surely an MI box is far too long for al but the highest powered 205s?
Rich_p 23 Posted December 13, 2008 I had what I thought was a be1 1.6 box on my 1.9 and the first to gears were very low ratio, weve now fitted a be3 1.6 box and it doesn't seem quite as quick, could the original have been a diesal box?
dirtdog 4 Posted December 14, 2008 It's a common mistake to mix up the derv box with a GTi box apparently
Ryan 99 Posted December 14, 2008 It's a common mistake to mix up the derv box with a GTi box apparently Often if you get a replacement gearbox from a breakers they'll just give you the first BE gearbox they find, they don't care what the ratios are, as long as they fit. pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted December 14, 2008 Surely an MI box is far too long for al but the highest powered 205s? No, all gears will be lower than the1.9 gearbox usding an Mi box. Graham.
