205 Handling Overhaul

Recommended Posts

jamiej

Just a quick question to all you rebuild enthusiasts.

For a 1.9 GTI, what kind of money are you looking at to overhaul the main suspension and steering parts.

Essentially, im toying with the idea of, in the near future, changing all the main suspension, steering and brake components to make a bit of a track monster. Possibly changing the engine in the long run. Think it would be better to improve handling before sticking a big engine in.

So, on a sensible budget what would you swap with what.

I was thinking,

New steering rack (GSF) OR refurb peugeot one (inc tie rods and tie rod ends)

Poly Bush Lower arms

which i can get a price for myself

But as for the suspension what kind of kit do you guys use and how much does it cost.

im thinking an uprated gas shock, rather that coilovers, Any ideas on the best type ?

As for the rear, re conditioned rear beam is probably the way to go right ? circa £100 ? what would cost to recon my current beam, is it worth it ?

Brake wise, the GTI6 set up seems the common choice, circa £150 ?

Many thanks

Jamie

Any opinions/comments always welcome.

a complete refurb on your ream beam will be around £350 but you might be able to buy one allready done a bit cheaper but it'll still be £250+

the 307 hdi brakes are another option prices for both brakes will be nearing the £200 mark (calipers, discs and pads)

Best shocks on a budget imo are the shocks off a 306 gti6 if not the uprated black bilsteins , make sure you steer clear of the rears though, they are notoriously poor. If your looking to spend a bit more the bilstein b4's with the eibach springs seem to be the weapon of choice for most people on here :). There is also a gaz group buy on at the moment with good discounts.

With regards to the steering rack a refurbed peugeot rack will probably be the better option, maybe even try to get hold of a xsara vts rack as these are pretty quick racks.

With regards to the rear beam i cant really comment on the price of a refurb as mine was done not long before I owned it , but i strongly recommend a set of BBM solid rear beam mounts, especially if its going to be used on the track.

Polybush wise I fitted the powerflex ones to mine and didnt notice a great deal of difference.....

Hope this helps

Jrod

The 'challenge spec' bilsteins that everyone rate on here are currently for sale in my ad. Aso have a refurb'd beam. :)

I'm sure others will pipe up about the brakes, but the stock 1.9 calipers in combination with a good pad, high temp fluid and some braided hoses are all you need for track work.

Unless your bushes are goosed leave them as standard, if they are goosed, replace them with standard.

Other upgrades to consider are group N top mount rubbers - a low cost way to make the car feel a bit more direct. If you don't want to go solid at the rear, group N rubber mounts for the beam also tone up the rear!

Rack, This will have to be GSF etc as Pug no longer supply them unless you find some old stock

Damper's, As Jrod has said the Bilstein B6 or Challenge (Group N) are the way to go with the Eibach springs

Brakes, Std is fine in good condition but a set of recon caliper's you may as well upgrade to GTi6 ones (£80 now), The HDi's are cheaper but the pads are more expensive.

Rear beam's can be anything from £150.00 > £1000+
