Engine Removal

hiya all

im removing my engine out of my 309 gti and ive become stuck (again!!!)

im nearly ready to get it out, all thats left is to take the driveshafts out and undo the engine mounts

problem is i cant get the passenger side wishbone off for love nor money, the pins allmost all the way out but it just wont come off, weve had allsorts trying to seperate them but at one point we were actually lifting the whole car off the stands

the drivers side virtually fell off which is even more annoying, weve tried hitting the wishbone for down with a lump hammer but did nothing, we tried undoing the bolts that hold it on and they just wont budge neither (felt like they were about to round off aswell)

what i was thinking is if we can get the drivers side driveshaft out then lift the engine out through the top at an angle (gearbox end for down) would this be possible with the wishbone still connected?

would the passenger driveshaft just fall out?

cheers

paul

i wouldn't want to try taking the engine out with the d/s still attached. it'll be really tricky and your liekly to damage something.

have you loosened off the 2 wishbone bolts? if not they could have been done up tightly with the wishbone in an upward position it may not want to move very easily. have you got a ball joint splitter? quite useful in these situations although you need to be careful not to catch and split the ball joint boot.

Has similar problems first time I took my engine out, what you need to do is get someone to pull down on (or use crowbar or something) the wishbone whilst you rotate the hub on the ball joint. I found there was a particular position which allowed the wishbone to come loose. It varied for each side best bet to just to persist but having someone to help is easier first time round.

Undo the shock bolt on the hub. Tap a 8mm square sump plug key in the back of the claw, turn it 45 degrees and simply tap the hub down.

Sorted in under 5 minutes

It is possible to leave that driveshaft attached, but it should be possible to get the wishbone out. Insert a long prybar between the wishbone and a handy imovable object. Have an assistant sit on it while you alternatly belt the wishbone bone and gently tap the center of the hub. Its all about the angle of the dangle. If you get really desprate, undo the bolts that hold the wishbone onto the subframe.
