How Much For A Garage To Fit A New Clutch?

Recommended Posts

maturin23

Hi all,

The gear change on the pug has been getting steadily worse - hard to engage first three gears, very sharp take-up and the last couple of times I've started it up I've immediately had the smell of burning clutch (this is just after idling in neutral)

I'm assuming I'll need a new release bearing and a new plate - as far as I know the car hasn't had a new clutch for 60k miles.

I've been told by the wife I can't block the driveway for a couple of weeks and there's no chance I'll do a clutch swap by the side of the road plus I've got no free weekends for ages - so I'm going to have to take it to a garage.

Any idea what ballpark figure I should be expecting for parts and labour?

rough guess at £65 ish plus vat for a valeo/luk clutch kit (rlease BRG inc), and £150 odd for labour.

Receipts I've seen for a clutch swap on previous 205's I've bought have been around the £250-300 mark.

"couple of weeks"? You really don't have much faith in yourself do you

When the clutch went on my Mi I swapped it in a couple of hours on my mates drive...

However its cold and wet so I don't blame you, but don't pay any more than 2-3 hours labour or you've been had IMO.

(I've been meaning to PM you for ages, keep finding myself with loads to do but I'll be in touch soon...)

Miles

Clutch from a Garage would be around the £100 > £150 mark then labour on top (London rates must be a good £80.00 per hour as they are down here if not more), If every thing comes undone then it's 2 to 3 hours work, If bolt's are rusted in etc then it can take a while longer

I had one done for £150 fitted so make sure you ask about as it can be done on a budget.

Thanks for the help so far, guys.

I was thinking around £250/£300 top whack so no shocks yet..

Hehe - that's based on having one 3 hour crack at it myself (even a 3 hour 'pug permit' is tough to get approved  ) then leaving it 'til the following weekend to finally get the gearbox back on. I remember doing a nightmare clutch change on a 1.4 BX years ago (bell housing through the wheelarch) in the snow by the side of the road that took far longer than 'book' - I'm older and wiser now

Shouldn't take any more than a day all going well. I'd do it for a fair price!

My mate paid, 250 pound all in when he had his done

I did mine on lifts at work and it took ages!!! Ha Ha, about 8 hours, lots of niggly problems but it did only cost me 70 pound all in, oh and a new cable at the same time is highly recommended mine broke when i tried to undo it fully and my mates snapped 2 weeks after the clutch change

One of my friends who works in a garage does 205 clutches for the cost of the clutch plus £100, usually works out about £150 all in.

If you're serious Baz send me a PM with a suggested price (and do include some profit) - I'd rather keep it in the family so to speak. Just thinking about it - the car will be sat on the driveway unused from this Thursday evening 'til Sunday night as I'm taking the family off to Devon for the weekend.

Tim - I would ask for your mate's contact info - but I've just driven a mile and there are wisps of smoke and that unmistakable smell coming from the gearbox area... So I think Sussex may be a bit ambitious.

I might try and wind the clutch back a bit before I drive to the garage.
