axnutty 10 Posted November 4, 2008 Just got my Mi16 coversion done (1.9 alloy version) and the car MOT'd ( ) The engine has ben sat for 3 years so I expect it to be a little rough round the edges, but so far its doing well but I'm having some idleing issues. From cold the car starts perfectly, and holds 1000rpm nicely. It drives fine and all is good. Once warm it starts to hesitate sometimes on cruising and miss very slightly (acceleration and overun its fine) , this is not very commen - its only done it a handful of times in the past 100miles of bedding in. The real problem is only noticeable in stop start traffic. If you dip the clutch and come to a halt the engine revs decrease to 2k and hold there for a few secs then slowly creep down to 1k where it idles fine. If i blip the throttle in neutral it will do it again - hold at 2K then slowly come down to 1k again. However when I come to set off and labour the engine it can take a little extra throttle to coax it to pull smoothly and may miss a bit (again very slightly) it has now on 2 occasions stalled as i didnt coax it enough and its taken maybe 5mins of trying to get it started again, with a noticeable smell of fuel. Ive not had much chance to do any research or much tinkering yet, but I gave the idle control valve a once over, clean out and checked its operation and resistance between the pins (8 ohms) so I think thats OK. I also for what its worth cleaned out the AFM but so far its no different. Any other ideas or areas to check before I start doing some digging on here or trawling eBay for a set of 45's
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted November 5, 2008 ICV would've been my first suspect but if you've already checked it over then next I'd look at the throttle body for wear or the staged opening linkage for wear / sticking? (both throttle butterflies shouldn't open together) Also where does your throttle cable feed in from? I've seen these stick & cause a high idle occasionally but it usually depends on how they've been routed. (iirc BX route over the manifold & 405 from around or viceversa). Graham. 1 FAT PUG 39 Posted November 5, 2008 if they have an ecu temp sensor i would look at that, as i had problems with my saxo vts and that was the cause of it, that used to miss and over rev and cut out and not want to start again then stunk of petrol
Alan_M 66 1 Cars Posted November 5, 2008 Worn throttle body spindle. Every one I've seen has been rogered. Mine does it, fine when cold as the ICV controls the idle, when warm its the TB. Not mainy options to do a longterm rectification either, as they are all buggered. Solutions are fit GTi6 manifold and TB (using Mi TPS) or aftermarket management utilising independant TB's or GTi6 TB (binning AFM). Keep meaning to take a buggered TB into work to see if I can turn up a few nylon bushes for it. I'm sure they can be broken down into bits.
KRISKARRERA 2 1 Cars Posted November 5, 2008 Mine does this too. Doesn't stall but has the hestitation on small throttle openings and throttle hang if you boot the gas pedal in neutral. I don't understand the spindle wear. If the butterfly valves were loose and flapping around then you could understand it. I guess all it takes is a minute amount of play for it to mess up the airflow a bit. Noticed there's quite a few throttlebodys from other cars on ebay that might fit. Unless they all do it when they get old.
axnutty 10 Posted November 5, 2008 OK - was just plain annoying driving it today through traffic, so I will have a look at the ECU temp switch as well as well as the throttle body operation,. In the meantime I did notice something else. When its running at 2K which it did today and stayed there, the rubber pipe from the ICV to the rubber AFM/mani connection was soft and was being sucked in on itself - if i adjusted this by hand and held it round in shape, so the air could be sucked through it more effectivly the engine revs instantly dropped to a more appropriate level (I'd say 1k but I couldnt see the tacho ) ... you think it could just be a worn out pipe thats become to maleable with age causing all this?? mr_exe 1 Posted November 5, 2008 Good post this, and it looks like i'm in knackered throttle body club as well
