yeah a saw that, but surly that must be wrong, i wanting to use stainless steel allen heads bolts only for the inlet manifolds. I have juts found an old exhaust stud, which are the same size etc, and according to the calipers they are 20mm long. so i would need a 20mm cap bolt bottom of cap head to the bottom.

I can assure you that whilst 20mm will just about be sufficient (providing you are using a standard gasket), it's ridiculously short, and 30mm must be correct.

Some muppet has fitted 20mm ones on mine. When I fitted a 3mm PTFE gasket, they only just nipped up, I mean like 1 or 2 threads worth :o (the fact that I didn't consider that in the first place also makes me a muppet). The 2nd stupid thing was that I didn't stop to measure the bolts on mine and think about what size I ought to replace them with. Instead I waited until I was at work and then asked the question on here, and the answer came back that they were 30mm M8 bolts. Thinking that my current ones were the original ones, I went and ordered some 40mm M8 bolts, and of course they are too long  . So the point is, it's 30mm you need. And if anyone reading this is thinking of fitting a PTFE gasket, check what bolts you have currently.

30mm sounds right to me too. They don't cost much OE from Pug, and have a reassuringingly good fit.

Very much worth the effort IMHO to take your time and get a proper allen key style tool to do them up, i.e. wobbly joints for sockets etc, as they are a soft metal which easily round/burr.

Don't only note GLP's advice as to what gasket you're using, as you may also need to consider your manifold configuration, i.e. standard, carbs, bodies because 1 or 2 of your inlet manifold bolts may need to be studs with washers and nuts, just to get access to do them up.

Indeed. On my MI the 2 middle top ones are studs and nuts, the rest are cap head bolts.

No problem.

Perhaps a dumb question, but shouldn't your tag line under your avatar say: 'bi-f***ing-noculars'?

Anal or what?
