illuzion 0 Posted November 1, 2008 (edited) Hi, I have a 205 GTi 1.6 90/H with a BE3 gearbox, blew the diff and one of the planet gears punched a whole in the casing. I had a BE1 gearbox from a Citroen BX GTi (Mi16 gearbox??) fitted, they had to cut a hole in the casing to get it to fit. I think they used the release bearing from the BE1 box. Quick shift linkages were already on the car before the box swap, they were reused. Basically everything was re-used apart from the box itself and the oil. Reverse was now top left instead of bottom right, and 1st was in a very thin notch between reverse and 3rd. After a short while, the clutch was still biting when the pedal was fully depressed. I thought maybe the clutch cable just needed adjusting so I tightened it up slightly. This only worked for a short while, now when i start the engine, any pressure on the clutch pedal and the clutch makes a screeching noise, and with more pressure, its putting load on the engine, the revs drop and smoke comes out of the clutch.. I'm guessing its the release bearing.. When changing from BE3 to BE1 is there anything else that needs changing ?? Thanks Edited November 1, 2008 by illuzion
Baz 421 Posted November 1, 2008 clutch cable & pedal, and if you don't want to select reverse randomly then a reverse lockout lever & cable.
illuzion 0 Posted November 1, 2008 Thanks. Could not having changed the pedal/cable have caused the problems I have experienced ?
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted November 1, 2008 Sounds like who ever did the job wasn;t aware of what they should have been doing, Why a hole needed cutting I have no idea as the BE1 and BE3 casing all change over to a degree unless it's a very early BE1 then you cannot swap the BE3 clutch arm over. As for the clutch bearing I bet this has been just fixed on somehow and has come loose, Also the top selector arm need's changing and again the BE1 and 3's are very slightly different.
