Cam Bottom Pulley Rubbing

Recommended Posts

benlilly

Hi,

After assembling all the parts at the pulley end of the crank, including the oil seal carrier plate, I found that the back of the cam belt pulley rubs against the carrier plate.

This seems strange, especially as the compression from the bolt on the end of the crank squashes all the parts together, including the oil pump sprocket which relies on friction (no woodruff key). The cam pulley touching the oils seal carrier plate would reduce this compression. At worst, the oil pump sprocket may slip.

Even if it doesn't cause a serious problem, it's going to make a horrible noise.

I did use the paper gasket which is quite thick. Will this compress and let me tighten the plate down a bit more to give a bit of clearance.

Have I perhaps got a mix of different age parts? Pug quirk?

Pretty sure different age engines have different plates, but unsure what the differences are.

Can't see the paper gasket affecting it that much

Have you got the bottom pulley on the right way?????? B)

Yes, pretty sure it is all on the right way. Going to have a look at it shortly so I'll take a photo.

On my Mi16 I tried using a gasket on my end plate (I had it as part of a full Payen set of gaskets) but I found it was so thick that that even when the plate was torqued the added thickness resulted in the oil pump sprocket still spinning freely!!! Be very careful if using a gasket. I binned it and used sealant as recommended

Sounds like a good plan. Thanks,
