adamc 0 Posted October 28, 2008 Is there a way of changing the bottom engine mount without taking the driveshaft off? (i'm not lazy, i just want to stop all the gearbox oil coming out.)
mattbenselin 0 Posted October 28, 2008 Do you mean the entire mount bracket that's bolted to the block? If so you will need to remove the drive shaft. If you mean just the rubber mount insert then undo the bolt, knock it out and the engine will hang from the upper mounts. You can then remove the rubber part and replace with similar or an uprated harder version. This is what I did with mine and it worked fine.
jackherer 543 Posted October 28, 2008 I changed one once on the car without taking the shaft out, its not easy or practical though really, you may as well take the shaft out and change the gear oil while you're at it.
mojo1997 0 Posted October 29, 2008 Do you know the part number for just the lower mount rubber insert, I've looked on service box and can only find a part number for the whole mount including the mount body.... Are you also changing the rubber in the yoke that fix's the mount to the sub-frame...
Rupertfinch 6 Posted October 29, 2008 Sorry for the hijack, but while I'm in the process of twating about with the drivers side drive shaft, the engine mount did catch my eye - what are the benefits of renewing/upgrading for a car that won't ever see the shiney asphalt of a track? mattbenselin 0 Posted October 29, 2008 An uprated mount will reduce engine pitch as you accelerate. This will give a greater 'feel' for the engine and enhanced throttle response due to it transmitting the power without rocking back first. It will also help reduce wear on the other mounts and exhaust manifold. If you have a 4 branch manifold it will help stop it from cracking over time due to the engine pitching. Downsides are that the original softish rubber mount was used to dampen the vibrations created by the engine. Replacing it with a harder rubber one (group n) or even a solid mount will greatly increase the vibrations you will feel inside the car. My car has the soft rubber mounts and when I've driven in one with a group n mount the difference was noticable with more virbation and noise in the car on the road so maybe not the best option if your sticking to road only use. However I am hoping to soon fit a 4 branch manifold so will need to upgrade to group n rubber as mentioned above. Hope this helps.

Gear changes under hard acceleration are better too as the gearbox doesn't move as much relatively to the gearstick and rods.
adamc 0 Posted October 29, 2008 cheers for all the replies and i hope its helped others too, i have a group N mount to go on, i think i will give it a go tomorrow, is the best way to get the old one out to hacksaw it?
mattbenselin 0 Posted October 29, 2008 You could do or hammer and something pointyish but blunt! like a 5mm metal dowel or something.
Peetypug 5 Posted October 29, 2008 yeah i've cut the rubber out then gone at it with a hacksaw (put the blade through upside down then attach it) the tricky bit for me was getting the new one in i used a g clamp and plate over one side of it make sure you clean it properly and put some grease in to aid its entry
adamc 0 Posted October 29, 2008 ok thanks, i will try and do that tomorrow after i have put all the front of my car back on.
