Miles 331 1 Cars Posted October 24, 2008 All of the uprated Gear-rods basically do the same thing in not too many word's, Some just have a single retaining clip so can be a fiddle to fit and clunk allot, Other's including mine use 2 clip's, One to locate the ball in the ball joint and a retaining clip to ensure they don;t fall off. Then there's Alloy and steel one's, Steel are stonger and what I supply, Alloy can bend. Other Rods are just painted up and go rusty in no time at all, and mine blowing my own trumpet here are Plated to ensure a lasting finish just like the OE one's. I supply with the kit at extra cost a bush (As BBM) which fit's in the quadrant or 'L' pivit on the subframe along with the rod's and there's hardy a need for a quickshift!! number2301 1 1 Cars Posted October 25, 2008 I got a set of Miles' rods and fitted them yesterday, and if I'd bought them purely to tighten the shift up I'd be disappointed as there's still a bit of a wobble. Now I want to emphasise this, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they're not good kit because they are and they have tightened it up, just not totally. As it goes I bought them because my old ones kept popping off which I've been told these won't (all good so far). I guess my point is that you probably need to pay attention to the other parts which cause a vague change as well, which I believe are the bush Miles mentions above and I've seen people mention a bolt to the sub frame which usually needs tightening up. As you have mentioned, the bolt on the L shaped bracket can get loose, but its more the bushes inside gets worn, I've got the gear linkage rods from Miles, but the gear change only got really sorted when Miles fitted the Phosphor Bronze bushes (recent group buy) to my quick shift L bracket, gear changes feel really precise now. Also a good thing to check your lower engine mount, if that is worn that can also make the gear change feel sloppy.

I had noticed an improvement with the rods alone, but they are well complimented by the bronze bush. The reason for changing my rods was due to the old ones popping off going over Speed humps and eager gear changes.
cybernck 403 1 Cars Posted October 25, 2008 even if you had linkages without any play, there can still be a bit of a play inside the gearbox . there are bushes on the gearstick too btw .
JayCC 0 Posted October 25, 2008 Miles, How much do you charge for a full Kit? I see its £35 for the two gearbox links and £20 for the long one. Do you sell the bushes for the L bracket? I fitted a quickshift recently and if i tighten the L bracket main bolt too tight, the L bracket wont move. I have adjust the bolt just tight enough so i can still change gear, but the bolt moves with the L bracket. Do you have to grind some rubber off the bushes? would i have to do he same with bronze bushes? regards James
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted October 25, 2008 This is the all too common thing with the std bush on the Quadrant, which is why we came up with the Bush idea, Which oddly enough came from the 306 as this uses the same idea abit a different size, This gives you a insert in the bush which mean's the quadrant has a proper swivel point unlike the std shouldered bolt and crinkle washer. Me and Stew (BBM) sell the bush
Baz 421 Posted October 26, 2008 even if you had linkages without any play, there can still be a bit of a play inside the gearbox . Particularly if it's a BE1, the selector arm furthest to the NS seems to wear badly, no matter what you replace sometimes there's still a little slop in the gear lever from that arm. Alfie 6 Posted October 26, 2008 Going to have a look into my gear linkage, I think clutch adjustement is also needed tho, I struggle sometimes to engage reverse. My gear stick has little play side to side but has quite a bit for and aft. Do I access this "bolt" in the linkage only from the underside or can it be reached via under the bonnet?
