I've decided to go for a DES GrpN exhaust and I really can't decide to get one with the centre silencer or not.

I do the occasional trackday so it can't be too loud, but at the same time I don't want to lay down cash and find it sounds like standard.

What's the advice of those with the DES system? GLPoomobile has kindly offered me a listen to his un-silenced centre section exhaust, but without a dB meter it might be difficult to make an educated decision othjer than 'sounds nice'!

I guess it comes down to those who have a centre silencer - does it still sounds a bit rorty.

I'm beign a total tart, I know!

I've seen+heard the 2 box system on the stockhatch rallycross car that DES look after and its nothing like standard, a distinctive purposeful note without being "loud" bt it does have a "special" engine bolted to it as well

I should have mentioned that Neil at DES will ask you if it's a road car or track car, as he'll be able to advice and/or decide what solution is most suitable for you to keep within noise regs.

I'd be interested to hear more opinions on this too. Since my system is effectively bodged on and leaking slightly at the front joint, I may consider taking it up to DES next year and have them fit a middle box and they can weld the front pipe on properly then too. I don't find the single box system too loud, but it's impossible to fault find these rattles, squeeks and whines that develop, cos they are so difficult to hear above the exhaust!

found some video's from the rallycross at Lydden, not great but gives an idea comared to a standard system.

noise is mainly from the white 205, IIRC the rest of the field were on standard systems bar one that ripped his backbox off

I would get the mid box if I were you (actually I did  ).

Its not much fun getting black flagged for breaking the noise limit which is being more stringently enforced nowadays.

Reading your signature you have a 2.5" GrpA exhaust, which I'd expect to be louder than a GrpN anyway. How does it sound with the mid-section? I don't need a new exhaust you see, I just want it to sound better!!

If you are planning to do trackdays I would get the centre box, especially on the 2.5" system.

The mid section certainly makes a difference to the volume of the noise.

I can't really comment on the noise you will get as I run a charged GTi6 lump, sounds OK to me though.

Loud exhausts are OK but they do get a little wearing after a while, I prefer a little stealth.

Anyone fitted one of these themselfs with a good result. Is it an easy job or best to let DES fit it.

Just a 400 miles round trip from here so also have to weigh in the petrol money if i get one

Des offer free or very cheap fitting and the exhaust is fitted on the car so the fit is perfect. If your fitting yourself make sure you tell them this when you order and the system will be made accordingly.

Just think the total petrol cost might not by much more than the postage you pay, so you might be better off just making a trip over there to get the exhaust fitted and you know you'll never have to worry about adjusting it. Neals a friendly chap too and can talk for hours about 205's!

its about 400mile round trip so about 1 and half tank of petrol which comes to almost £75.

will just see what price neal quotes and have a think

sorry to thread highjack OP

Just to clarify - I'm not after a 2.5", I just mentioned it because Garry has one.

I'm after the GrpN because it looks stock. I just want a rorty sound, that's all!!! But I don't want it so loud it will stop me doing trackdays so I guess it needs to be sub 100dB.

There's nothing wrong with my current exhaust, it just sounds a bit dull.

Yes - I am being a tart.

Was wondering what the guys with the GrpN + mid section silencer thought of their sound - I know there are quite a few guys on here with such a set up.

Cheers.

Well the system I have on my 205 is a bit of a cross between the 2.5" system and Grp N. Its is basicaly a 2.5" downpipe tapering down to the Grp N tail pipe, that seems to keep the db's down without having 2 silencers.

That might be a good option for you.

I've got a DES full stainless system with the middle box. It was tested at 84dB static at Bedford so it'll definitely get through any trackday regulations.

Saying that however, it's still pretty loud above 4K rpm, but that's probably due to the lack of any interior in my car. It does have a really nice raspy sound under acceleration. I've uploaded a couple of crap vids here:

Can't recommend it enough really... it was just what I was looking for.... not too loud, but sounds great and is discreet (no massive tailpipe)

I've done nothing on this since I started this thread!

But thanks Davey - that's what I wanted to hear. Your exhaust sounds nice and raspy without being Max Power loud, which is exactly what I'm after.

This is exaclty what I'm after too, a nice sound but without making my ears bleed!

How much do these systems go for? roughly.

it really does depend son the spec of your engine, what you want from it, and the cost of steel at the time (particularly stainless), give them a call, Neal is often far to busy to get to a computer nowadays :)

Just posted this in the thread requesting pics for this system, but thought i'd see if anyone on here has any expereince too:

I've just had my car back fom AB motorsports who advised that i'm prob losing a few hp by having my current system:

2.5inch downpipe, 2inch boxes and centre pipe, and the 1 3/4 tailpipe.

Does anyone have any experience on this? Would this system really be that bad for the mi16, and should I have gone bigger? (There's a lot of "I reckon" with exhausts/sizes etc so i'm after any experience people have had esp with rolling road tests etc?)

I'll have a check with Neal at some point anyway, but wanted to see if anyone has any test results etc?

Ta

Dave

I know Neal has built quite a few powerful Mi16 and 8valve race cars, so I would imagine he has some ideas for what to use.

the main problem you have is fitting a large enough silencer under the back instead of smaller pipes to keep the sound at sensible levels

I think sean McKeown had similar problems with his DES system with his new engine, its pushing a fair bit more gas out the back and faster than the standard engine!

Thanks welshpug,

Sorry, forgot to that that it's already a DES supplied system

I do trust Neals judgement, and my car's only a standard mi16 so i'm sure they would've advised it it was gonna be too small, plus as you say, there's always a tradeoff power vs noise.

Was just thinking if anyone's had any rolling road comparisons using a std system vs a similar DES?

Cheers

Dave

Looking at buying a fairly standard engine which comes with a DES development 4 branch and stainless group N system, so I'm wondering the same as above i.e power gains\losses and also suitability for rallying.

Cheers!

I always use 2 1/4" or 2 1/2" all the way thru with good size box's, but in Mild Steel as it's so much quietier, Stainless is known to be allot louder for obious reason's

Having seen a few of the DES system's I can't see them giving any huge gain's over std, I could be proved wrong thou.
