13" Wheels: What Will Fit Over 247's With 1.9 Calipers?

Recommended Posts

Stu

Yup, im backtracking.. I do love my 285mm setup, but i may have found a home for it which means im tempted to try the 247 setup with some 1155's or whatever in a bid to use 13" wheels and enjoy the plentiful supply of slicks that seem to be floating round at the moment.

So, i ideally id like to keep the 1900 calipers, are there any 13" wheels that clear these without using massive spacers? Or am i gonna HAVE to use 1.6 calipers?

Search

I can tell you the following combinations work, not much experience with HEAVY 1900 calipers as its awful unsprung weight

5.5" Visa GTi wheels with 1.6 calipers, discs, hubs, no spacers required

6" Ford XR2 pepperpots with 1.6 calipers, discs, hubs, 6mm spacer required

Not tested on the road but from my fitting together off the car in the garage tests...

6" Ford XR2 pepperpots with 1.6 calipers but 1.9 discs and hubs, 10mm spacer required

Note that I run without the anti rattle springs on the ford wheels as well. The standard Visa wheels of which I have a set of 4 if interested heh, run 185/60/13 for road tyres however I find on them and the XR2 wheels, 175/60/13 a better fit as less overhang of the sidewalls.

Its very important with slicks to know how they are measured. Avons for example come up much wider than Michelins. I "think" michelins measure across the flat and then down the sidewalls to the widest point whereas Avon only measure the width with a straight line therefore a 210 wide Avon slick will need a wider rim than a 210 Michelin. I think the ones I run are from here http://www.sticky-slicks.co.uk/ and these

Michelin 16/53-13 Slicks

Ex-Formula Renault slicks 180mm wide, 530mm Diameter. Equivalent to 185/60/13 tyres. Generally 3-4mm of tread left and ideal for Sprints, Hillclimbs, Racing & of course Trackdays

There are a number of other 13" wheels, steels from some other PSA's although 106's etc are probably all 3 stud? other Fords although need fwd only ones else totally wrong offset, xr2i etc

didnt the UK rallye use 13's?

can't find any 14" steels listed for the P1 205, but there is a 13x5.5 steel, 540167 STEEL WHEEL 25.46 GBP

they are white

if they dont clear straight off you should get away with a hubcentric spacer of the smallest thickness from Rippthrough.

yeh the uk rallye used 13's. the euro rallye used a slightly wider 13 inch rim. not sure on measurements though.

side by side they are wider.

106 rallye uses 14's in either a 5.5 inch or a 6 inch rim. they are 4 stud aswell.

I'd really like to know this to.

I have also searched but all the info seems to come from Darren and is in relation to 1.6 calipers.

I already have 1.9 calipers fitted and don't want to have to change calipers, disc and pads etc, and would prefer to run without spacers.

Are rwd ford alloys another option or do they run a higher offset?

Failing that where can I get 14" slicks from as 1.6 wheels are plentyfull!

Looks like youve got the same driving force as me, the abundance of 13" slicks!

Ive not seen many sets of 14's or 15's bud, so given that 17's will kill the handling 13's seem to be the weapon of choice.

God only knows what they will do to the already low gearing..

You wouldn't have to, 1.6 calipers will replace your 1.9 ones on 1.9 hubs & discs.

Same way that 1.9 calipers replace 1.6 items with 1.6 hubs & discs.

As i've said before, rallyman runs Lotus Sunbeam rims with no issue, and looks to be a fair bit more space between the rim and 1.6 calipers he runs.

Some ford alloys would suit, but most are ET25+ at least, not ideal, but with 10mm spacers no trouble.

Depending on what size tyres you get, it won't change it massively considering the rolling radius of most 15s with relatively low profile tyres is about the same as most 13" & 14" rim & tyre combinations, unless you get ultra low rubber band like profile tyres for 13s!

Gearing can be an issue depending on where you go. Getting off the line on 13's with a 1.6 box is a bit of a mission as its too low but irrelevant for trackdays (I sprint mainly). Mine tops out at a theoretical 126 in 5th iirc but ive only seen 120 at Goodwood as it wont pull over that due to the injectors and that was calculated off the rev counter and a friend spectating with a radar gun before anyone goes off about how their standard 1.6 will do 140 easily! I only hit about 115 at Brands etc, thats with 168bhp, if you have a lot more then places like Snetterton, bedford and so on you will be on the limiter with a 1.6 box

Sunbeam rims aren't the most common things though!

On the pics I've seen they seem to sit further out than standard wheels do so maybe thats wy they give more clearance
