2ltrrabbit 0 Posted October 20, 2008 Hi all, Forgive me if i sound daft but this is my 1st 205 gti. I recently bought a 205 with fire damage to engine bay, not major just a slight burn! Anyhow i just bought what i thought was a 1.9 engine and ecu (as advetised) to replace mine. however i'm not sure what i bought is what i want. my ecu reads 280 000 359 the new one reads 280 000 340? also the engine has no oil cooler, i'm starting to think i have a 1.6 engine on my hands? Were is the engine number located or what would be an easy way to find out what it is? Thanks for any help steve
hexhamstu 9 Posted October 20, 2008 check if there is a spacer plate inbetween the block and the sump if there is its a 1.9 and if there isnt its a 1.
2ltrrabbit 0 Posted October 20, 2008 I'll go check and while i'm out there i'll check the engine serial number. do you know were is this located?

matty_gti 20 Posted October 20, 2008 (edited) Then it is a 1.6 engine. Edited October 20, 2008 by matty_gti
steve@cornwall 100 Posted October 21, 2008 Then it is a 1.6 engine. Or a 1.9 Citroen...................... (just to further confuse things)
mattbenselin 0 Posted October 21, 2008 I used to have a 1.9 Citroen ZX Volcane engine lying around which instead of having a sump spacer, had a deeper sump, and extra strengthening on the block casing itself. You never know your engine could have been changed at some point or at least the sump changed. Good luck my friend.
2ltrrabbit 0 Posted October 21, 2008 Are they any difference's between 1.6 and 1.9 AFM?
DamirGTI 342 Posted October 21, 2008 Yes they're identical from outside but the mixture calibration is different in between the two ... 1.6 AFM it'll have last three digs - 056 (stamped on the black plastic cover) 1.9 AFM - 109 If you still doubt which engine is 1.6 or 1.9 (and you've already checked color of the injectors , presence of spacer plate , ECU numbers , AFM numbers etc. ) - whip out the spark plugs and measure the piston stroke the 1.6 will have longer and 1.9 shorter stroke that should solve the mystery .. 2ltrrabbit 0 Posted October 21, 2008 Cheers bud better add a maf to my shopping list too Also as my loom in my 1.9 is naf could i use the 1.6 loom on the 1.9 engine with a 1.9 ecu? soz for all the questions but i'm getting to know the old girl a bit more now
DamirGTI 342 Posted October 21, 2008 (edited) If the 1.9 unit/ECU is Jetronic then yes it'll be plug and play however if it's Motronic then no , cos the Jetronic ECU (1.6 or 1.9 no matter ..) connector wont fit the 1.9 Motronic ECU .. DamirGTI 342 Posted October 21, 2008 (edited) the 1.6 will have longer and 1.9 shorter stroke Damn , just spotted , did a little mix up sorry -> it's the other way around so : 1.6 short stroke : 73.00 mm 1.9 long stroke : 88.00 mm Bedtime me thinks Edited October 21, 2008 by DamirGTI
