claypole1360 6 Posted October 19, 2008 Hello, first proper question so here goes and forgive me if it seems a little numpteeish. Firstly, I have an 88 1.9 gti on an f plate, it's done 99000 miles and struggles to idle at less than 1500rpm, a blip on the throttle takes it down to a 1000rpm, but then it moves back up to 1500, why and what is the fix? Secondly, my gti has what can only be described as a cam rattle, it goes up and down with the revs, if I replace the cam, will I need to do the valves or will that solve the problem, and how many different types of standard cams are there, I need to keep it standard for future sprint race options. cheers Claypole

Id say its SAd though. All 1.9 cams are the same - in fact there the same as late 1.6 items aswell. If you swap your cam then you'll want to shim the tappets to get it nice and quiet. Youll need a micrometer and few other bits of kit, and a selection of shims. It may be that your cam isnt the problem, it may need the shims setting correctly, as the cams never tend to ware that badly. Or a blowing exhaust manifold can also make a ticking noise - more noticeable when the engines under load. Hope that helps. Matt
mattmk1 0 Posted October 19, 2008 Just to add, i have a spare Cam for sale if you do want to change it. But at 99k miles i doubt yours will be worn. Drop me a PM if you need it.
mattbenselin 0 Posted October 20, 2008 Hi, my 205 had a similar rattle and it turned out to be a heatshield on the exhaust manifold (not standard GTI I think, from a ZX) which was rattling and this got louder with revs. So your rattle could be from something else near, for example the cam pulley cover could be loose. As Mattmk1 said you may need to just re-adjust the idle screw on the throttle body to lower your idle rpm. I would also check the induction system for blockages and also the oil breather system as once clogged with 'mayonaise' the car tends to idle irratically. Just remove the pipes and clean them out. This can do wonders! The 1.6 has a different cam to the 1.9, I believe the 1.6 has higher lift but less duration. Do a google search there's a link to a picture which helps you identify which cam you have or you can try to measure your valve lift. Good luck!
