Phase 2 Or Phase 1

Recommended Posts

How do you tell a Phase 2 from a phase 1.. I have 1.9GTi on an 'F' plate. I think it is a phase two as it has the round heater controls but not sure !

If it has round heater dials and the door trim cover the whole door then it's a phase 2 interior you have :D

I thought E plate was the crossover time from ph 1 to 2 - so if it's an F then it shouldn't really be in question..

Yeah that is the phase two dash, but just to confuse they then altered the front indicator lenses to white, different ail lamps and the interior and exterior trim changed to black which technically, correct me if I'm wrong is the phase 2.

F reg was the crossover so some are a bit mixed and matched..

ph2 dash.. ph1 lights etc..

the red and white rear clusters are ph2.. and the smooth dash with round heater controls is ph2

anything else is ph1

Personally don't understand the 1/2 stuff as there were really 3 phases.

1 - slider heater controls

2 - updated dash

3 - updated rear lights + indicators and changed trim from grey to black and changed seat colour

Normally though I've seen 3 referred to as Phase 2, 2 as phase 1 and 1 ignored!

if you class it as only two phases, then the number 3 rts talks about is the second phase, and 2 is phase 1.5.

What about the Phase 2 dash in black? Or was that only used in GTis?

Dave Thornton's book to the rescue.

Pre '86 models did'nt have side repeaters on the wings.

Post '86 models had side repeaters, leather steering wheel, a rear washer bottle, different wing mirrors.

1988 - New engine (115bhp), new grey dash with round heater controls, and a monaco style tweed interior (1.6's).

1989 - Be3 gearbox introduced, Quartet style trim, c/locking as std.

1990 - Black trim introduced, exterior and interior, clear indicators and a new style lense, lights on warning buzzer, ABS became an option.

1992 - 1.6 deleted from range. 1.9 became a 'CAT' with grey carpet, std. power steering and air-con as an option.

I must disagree with that book, the 115bhp engine came in on April 86, I had one then :D , And as Peugeot used the parts bin, they has been grey trim with black seats and early light clusters, I had one of those to :o

but if phase 1.5 is 2 times it by phase 1 and add phase 3 but with phase 3 and 1 with 2 in there and 1.5 too I think that conclusively sums it up :o:D:D

That is incorrect, you forgot to carry the 1. :D

Think mattconys h-reg 205 had all the early grey trim, old style lights etc, yet I've seen Gs with black stuff.

ive got a 1991 phase 2, 3 whatever we calling it but mine hasnt got " lights on warning buzzer" were these fitted as standard if so where are they as mine must be broke, or did they require the inside light to work? as mine dont come on when i open the door

I agree with Miles on this, I thought the 115bhp engine and the side repeaters coincided with each other and that was an easy way to tell what engine was fitted.

A mate of mine hada C-reg 1985 1.6 that had the 115bhp engine fitted and I have seen others with it when I was first looking for a 205 GTi.

My 1988 E-reg 1.6 has the round dash controls but another mate had an E-reg 1.9 and that had the old style sliders for the heater controls and ugly dash.

Looking at Dave Thorntons book the 115bhp angine was fitted at the very end of the C reg year so every D-reg 1.6 should really have the 115bhp engine IMO.
