High Lift Cams

im currently running twin 40 weber carbs on a otherwise standard 1.9 8v engine and was thinking of getting a high lift cam installed

 

i was wandering which cam would be the best (make vs cost and what duration) for road use?

 

also is there anything else that should be done while getting it installed is it definately worth getting a vernier pully?

 

the big question, how much of a hammering will the piggy bank take

in the words of columbo "one last thing" will it still get through the mot emissions test on a for example 285 duration cam?

if set up correctly and on a rolling road then it may just squeeze through. Can't comment on the cam though as I don't even know whats is in fact in mine?

For a road car i would stick to around a 285(piper,kent,catcam,newmans theres laods to pick from ) will idle very nicely on carbs and produce a very strong midrange 3k upwards power.

Regarding emissions i am not totally sure but if its a non cat model you shouldnt have much trouble.

it is a non cat model, i allways ending up with having an argument in the garage as they reakon it should have a cat (reg jan 1993)

 

some say it was march 1993 it came compulsary, one garage reakoned it was 1990 onwards

Yours technically is a CAT required model it became compulsory in 1992 , might have to find a friendly mot tested then or fit a cat exhaust system just for the test.

mine had a pug sport 285 group A max torque cam and ticked over nice on the webers i had.

 

 

ps the cam is for sale for £150 plus i have an adjustable pully for sale

285 for a nice medium, won't be too lumpy at idle and still have a broad spread of torque, 300 may be a bit much and peaky, and a 270's almost pointless anyway.

Goodwood's were built in '91, it's the build date it goes on, not the registration date. If it's a computerised Mot, as they all should be now, it will come up requiring a non-cat emissions test.

i bought a kent cam kit which i hope to run on my 1.6 its a pt 27 will it be good enough to run with my twin 40's or will i go for something abit more grunty. i have no idea when it comes to cams tho, cheers

PT27 is a fairly HOT cam second hottest in the Kent range it will be good enough for sure can be a very effective cam . What are your other mods/intended use?

hopefully if funds allow will be running a 1.6 t40's with that cam and a stage 5 or 6 head, steel balanced and lightened crank, forged pistons, 4-2-1 exhaust manifold to group n system ballance and lightened fly wheel vernier pully, thats my first plan andway will proberly endup getting changed along the way.

Hi guys new to the forum....I have a Piper Fast road cam which I got so cheap I could not say no but looking at it against a 1.9 standard cam there's very little difference. From reading previous topics and other peoples experience they're not worth spending big money. If anyone would like it though as it does do something!, then let me know we can talk £'s!
