Oil Smoke - Good Compression

Recommended Posts

DooBeDooBeDo

My 1.9 has been stood for a while waiting for me to get around to diagnosing exactly why it's got a heavy smoking problem.

I did a compression test today, before and after warming it up. Before was 155, 180, 160, 160. When warm it's a consistent 200 across all cylinders +/- 2. However number 2 plug, starting at the drivers side, was slightly wet with oil when I pulled it out to do the warm compression test (that's the one that was 180 when cold).

It smokes really badly when warm and revved. Could this just be really shot stem seals, or am I likely looking at something more serious?

probably best to get the stem seals done first as it's fairly cheap and is likely the main culprit - then see how your oil consumption is

If you find someone local to do the stem seals cheaply, would you let me know. As I need mine doing and I think I've rang every local garage

likely to ge the stem seals, I've seen the valve guides heavily worn on a lot of occasions though so get them checked. New seals on worn guides wont last long and you'll be removing the head again

Cheers guys, I'll probably have a go at it myself. Is there an easy way to check the valve guides?

yeah, with the spring out you push the valves side to side, using a dial indicator telling you the play, also measure the valve stem..

im not sure of there tolerances, you may have to look into that
