Will I Have To Re Bleed The Coolant After This?

Recommended Posts

munster

I have a small water leak from what i think is the thermostat housing on the upper right of the engine and the plate holding the pipe from the radiator. (alloy mi16)

I want to take this plate off, clean it and re seal it with gasket sealent.

Can i do this without re bleeding the system? And how much water should i be prpeared to have come pouring out?

thanks.

Erm, I've never had to take it off... but I would have thought you'd have to drain the system before taking that part off?

Well its at quiet a high level in the system, so i thought i might get away with just loosing a bit of coolant...

Hmm, I suppose just place a bucket and see how much you lose then, if it's alot then yes- a quick rebleed would probably be wise.

there is quite a lot of coolant comes out of there. you are best to drain of at least half the coolant by disconnecting the radiator bottom hose and filling into a bucket. if your radiator is blessed with a drain plug then use that , but i've had major greif with drain plugs before and tend to just go for a hose.

if you just disconnect that hose then cooland will go everywhere. its uncatchable by bucket unless the bucket takes up the whole underside of the egine compartment.

As for bleeding afterwards the pugs arent too bad. after topping up run the engine . pay close attention to the water temp gauge and interior heater. if the heater starts to heat , the temp gauge goes up , and you feel the top radiator hose get hot once the engine is up to temp (80 degrees c approximately) then its fine.

Thanks pugnut.

I really wanted to avoid bleeding the system, but this leak needs sorting.

So i don't have the mi16 Haynes manual, but i do have the 205 manual. Will the procedure and Qtys/amounts be the same for my Mi?

Can someone tell me?

(Or point me to a nice guide, with pretty pictures)

Also, i want to replace my Engine Temp Sensor and hopefully improve my woeful fuel efficiancy. Would it be advisable to change that at the same time? Or doesnt it matter?
