Did you change the release bearing?

Could be the input shaft bearing in the gearbox.

refilled oil, and tried to pressure plates, old and new, at speed the noise goes off as it not under a lot of pressure. the grinding noise is mainly in first and second gear so might be input shaft as said

noise really bad now, sounds like the release bearing is ratting or grinding but the clutch works fine. just wish i knew whATS WRONG. GOING TO take gearbox out again tomorrow to find out why, i also have an old 1.9 gti box so i might put that on .

turn out the gearbox was knackerd, the input shaft grinded and jammed when turned by hand. cost me £85 for new gearbox.
