Xsara Idle Problems

Recommended Posts

leon 1.9

Quick question, I know not that many people on here will own one, but as this seems to be the fount of knowledge when it comes to any PSA engine:

My parents have a Citroen Xsara 1.4, which I believe has the 1360cc TU3 engine running newer management than the 205 TUs. I believe its also the same as that used in the Saxo and 306. Its run quite happily until recently, when apparently it won't idle until warmed up. I haven't yet looked at it (its 250 miles away) but my older brother sourced a replacement Idle Control Valve from a breakers and fitted it, but apparently it still seems strange (the revs are hunting).

Anyone know of any common idle issues with them? If its not any Idle Control Valve problem, then I'm not too sure.Noticed that they have a potentiometer attached to the throttle (According to the Citroen servicebox diagram) so could this be giving a strange feedback value to the ECU?

Other possibilities I'm thinking are either air temp sensor or MAP sensor, but not sure if either are particularly problematic on this engine?

Any help would be good.

Cheers

Leon.

my cousin had a similar problem, citroen changed the coilpack and idle control valve and it worked ;)

i think the crank sensor wire can get eaten through aswell so check that while your routing round your engine bay

Check for inlet air leaks.

could be idle control valve as said but there are lots of different ones so it may have the wrong one fitted. They also need configured. Have never fitted one without configuring it first so not sure if it's just that?

Lambda sensor can give bother too as the heating element doesn't heat up so it only works when engine is hot enough

Also do you know what management it is running: L3 or L4? L3 has lambda sensor in downpipe and L4 has 2 sensors, one in manifold and one after the cat?

No dash light up, which puzzled me. will tell my brother to check the crank sensor wiring is ok. I've already told him to try sticking his hand over the inlet and seeing if it stalls to check for air leaks.

I'll ask him to check how many Lambdas it has too. Its an early one of the newer shape Xsaras though can't remember the reg. Pretty sure he checked the ICV part number against the one Citroen told him it needed so I think the ICV is the right one.

How do you 'configure' them?

plug the diag equipment into it it configures it, basically moves it from fully open to fully shut a few times so it knows which is which.
