kate205gti 4 Posted October 5, 2008 have done a search but is there any way of telling for definate if this is the input shaft bearing or clutch release? or could it even be driveshafts the car started making a humming/whining noise when in gear when you pushed the gearstick up in fufth (if that makes sense), then suddenly turned into a loud whining/humming noise all the time whilst driving along the motorway at 60-70 dropped down to about 50 and noise still there, disappeared as soon as the clutch was pressed in but came back when released did a roundabout in 4th then 3rd and the noise has disappeared again but think it will be back shortly! the clutch was replaced about 1000 miles ago and was brand new and the flywheel skimmed and has been fine the driveshafts do need doing - they knock a bit round corners at low speed but not too horrendous any ideas where to look for the cause of this please? thankyou
kate205gti 4 Posted October 5, 2008 the starter motor was also sticking earlier - could it be this at all? ie: would this give same sypmtoms??
ablister 31 Posted October 5, 2008 if the noise goes away when the clutch is engaged then 9/10 it'll be gearbox fault as drive is taken away from it
