Mi16 Ticking & Whine

Recommended Posts

As title really

I have quite a loud ticking noise on acceleration. it gets faster the as my foot goes down?

Anyone know what it is?

Also i have a whine. at first i thought it might be the cam belt but im now thinking its the gearbox. Any ideas?

Do you get the whine out of gear if you rev? My cambelt whines a bit when hot... infact so does my gearbox but if I put the clutch in it goes away (so def gearbox!).

The loud ticking could be the injectors, they are quite loud on the mi16...

I have just fitted an Mi to my car and also get a loud ticking. As said I have put it down to the injectors.

Mine ticks too, but it sounded more like it was coming from behind the head, so I figured it would be a small leak from the exhaust manifold.

ive only noticed the whine when in gear. if i put the clutch down its fine so im putting it down to gearbox at the moment

i also thought it could be the injectors. sounds as if its coming from the ECU area but not if that makes any sense. if it is the injectors will a freshly ultra sonicly cleaned set do cure the issue.

would rather listen to the sound of the engine note or my music than the ticking

could be.. depending on how loud the ticking is...

if it's an 8v it could be valve clearances, old ford fiestas need their valve clearances adjusting every year or less.. ones that are neglected sound like a rattly bag of tin tick taks. Not sure how 8v's clearances are adjusted, think its shims.

However, if it's an MI , it could be a lifter (hydraulic cam lifter) not pumping up, When was the oil last changed or the engine last used, some older engines in need of an oil change get sticky lifters. essentially instead of shims (little washers) to correctly gap the cam to follower clearance, the MI pumps oil into an up turned bucket under pressure, that pushes the cam follower up onto the cam. If there is crap in the oil, it can get in the way of that pumping up and there will be a gap between the follower and the cam lobe, hence the tapping sound of your cam smacking into the follower.

hope this helps.

well when i got the car was only turned over every other weekend and heated up.

checked the oil when i got it and it was close to empty so that got topped up asap with fresh stuff. now running the car every day

so might need to do an oi change with a bit of engine flush then go from there?

Hmm, I've heard mixed things about using engine flush- especially on older engines.

Just go for an oil / filter change mate :)

Had a listen to mine earlier and it's definately mostly the injectors ticking that makes the biggest noise. When you are inside the car, I agree that it does sound as though it comes from the ECU area!

right on that basis im going to replace the injectors before i go looking into engine components

don't mean to sound pessimistic, but it will most probably still do it, they always tick! summat to do with the solenoids in the injectors so i have been informed.

They do always tick but they arent loud, you really need to pinpoint the noise before spending cash changing things. A blowing exhaust manifold is most common problem, start the car from cold and put your hand down the back of the head, the manifold wont get really hot for 30 secs or so so you should have time to feeel around for any blowing on your hand, just be careful.

It could be worn cams or tappets. You can rest a screw driver on the rocker cover and place your ear on the screw driver and any noise from the cams or tappets should be easily identifiable.

Every mi ive driven, you cant hear injectors tick from inside the car, but tappet or exhast blowing you can.

mine seems to be doing exactly the same, ithink mines either the speedo cable r exhuast blow at manifold, and the whiningm i believe is the water pump! or somewhere around there

Yeah whining is normally the cambelt being a little tight, especially if its worse as the engine gets hot. In turn the belt being too tight can harm the water pump bearings.
