Phase 1 ('86) 1.6 Temp Sensors

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

The water temperature gauge on my 1.6 doesn't work. I've also noticed that when the car gets warm it runs a bit lumpy throughout the range and sounds like it's popping/banging a bit. I've done a search and it seems that these problems might be interconnected? i.e. the faulty temp sensor is causing it to run rich? My investigations seem to show that there are two temps sensors on the lump. Does anyone which one does what and what the part codes are?

Many thanks,

Dave.

Ah, its self help time I think... ;)

I've established that the sensor for the temp guage is one of the two on the back of the distributor/thermostat housing (the other being the overtemp warning switch)

You can check the wiring back to the guage by disconnecting the wire to this and shorting it to earth...the guage should then read maximum.

These do not affect the running of the engine though.

There are other temp sensors, I believe the one for the management system is the one with a blue connector down near the SAD, under the distributor??...but I haven't got that far into it yet! :)

Thanks davey sprocket, I'll try the shorting thing to confirm if the gauge and wiring is ok.

If it is the sensor(s), does anyone know part numbers or the best place to source them? Also if I need to replace the temp sensor(s), does the system need flushing at the same time?

Any advice appreciated :)

Right, I've finally had the balls to register myself with Peugeot's servicebox, despite all the warnings that you have to be in the motor trade to use it!

And what a fun hour or so I've had in there!! ;)

The sensor for the guage is part no: 0000133772, listed as 12.17 inc the VAT. I don't know whether this means they stock this item though....

Thanks davey :)

Did it cost anything to register with servicebox?

No No, Looky here, This is pinned at the top of the forum section, follow the instructions....it does help if you can remember some of your schoolboy french though! Even once you've asked it to be in Anglais, its still mostly in Francais!

I've ordered a new sensor from my local freindly Pug dealer by quoting the part No and he didn't seem too concerned when I let on that I had access to servicebox...

The ECU temp sensor is £21.21 at Peugeot, this is the sensor which is sometimes associated with the running issue, this is £12ish from Partco.

The sensor for the guage which has no effect on the running is £12 at Peugeot :D

Doh!

Yep, you're right I hadn't spotted you were quoting a price for the ECU sensor!

I'll continue to try and get my guage working. The other Dave is trying to do the same first I think!

Does the ECU one fail very often???

Finally had the car running again this evening and yay, have a working temp guage!!

The problem on mine was fairly obvious actually once I took the two sensors out of the housing....someone had fitted two temp switches, rather than one switch and one sensor..... :)
