Head's Back On And Got It Running...

Recommended Posts

davey sprocket

Well, finally got the thing back together and quite chuffed I managed to put everything back on in apparently the right places, as it pretty much fired straight up.

It runs like a bag of crap but I was kinda ready for that as to be honest, it did before I stripped it, so I need to go through a whole re-set up of everything.

However, having let it warm up (til the fan cut in, as I can't get the temp guage to work...another story) it starts making a strange screechy, mechanical noise. Which bothers me somewhat!

I mentioned it to a mate last night as he's a former Pug mechanic and he said "hmmm.... cam bearing caps...are you sure you put them on in the right order as they came off??"

Well, I didn't dismantle the head, I left this to the machine shop that overhauled it for me. How am I going to tell if they're on in the wrong order????

Any other suggestions what the noise could be? I realise its difficult without hearing it but its like a metallic fan belt slipping type noise.

Mi16 cam caps are numbered, they can be seen clearly with the cam cover off.

1-5 from the flywheel.

Not sure on an 8v though....

The metal upper cambelt cover can make an absolute racket, especially if it has bent/moved enough to touch the pulley.

Take the outer metal part off, and pull the inner half so it is well away from the cam pulley - try again, and see if it still makes the noise.

OK, so the cam cover's coming off when I get home then! Matey didn't think Peugeot numbered them for some reason!?

Anthony, thanks for that, I'll check. It has to be said it did make this noise before I put any of the cambelt covers back (warmed up to temp to retension belt as per Haynes book) on but maybe the plate behind the pulley could be the culprit.

I do hope its something simple, there is no cash available for another rebuild!!

I'd be a lot happier if I could get the temp guage to work. Shorting the sensor wire behind the thermostat/distributor housing to earth puts the guage up to max, so the wiring seems to be intact. Does that suggest the sensor itself it duff?? Anyone got resistance measurements for the sensor when hot and cold???

Thanks y'all

try clipping that wire to the other sensor next to it.

Yeah, tried that, nothin doing there either.

The other sensor is marked 110, which I have assumed is the temp rating for the switch in it, so I reckon the other one is the sensor for the guage??

OK, so you guys were right, the caps are marked.

Well sort of.

Only the 2nd and 4th ones are marked but to be honest, there's no way you could muddle the other ones up as they're quite different.

And mine appear to be fitted correctly.

As for the noise, having warmed her up again, I'm beginning to wonder if it isn't an air leak kind of noise. I wonder if there's a split in a hose or something.

If you give the throttle a blip, on the closed throttle slow down, that's when the noise is most noticable. (Like really loud! The missus asked what was going on out there!)

I can see that the vacuum hose that goes from the inlet duct to the top of the oil filler cap thing, collapses under vacuum, which suggests there must be a blockage somewhere further on. I wonder if the large diameter pipe that comes of the bottom of the oil filler is kinked, there didn't seem much room for it above the starter motor when I was putting things back together.

Anyway, I'll have another play in the morning when daylight allows.
