Suspension Overhaul On The Rallye?

Recommended Posts

GTI6BOY

I have searched but nearly everybody knows what they want and there all different?

I want to sort the rallyes suspension but dont really know what to buy.

Now i ride on the bump stops due to running 50mm springs on the front and having a heavier engine. I want to purchase some better springs with a proper poundage to suit my car so the front works properly...but how do i work it out?

Dont get me wrong the car handles like its on rails but theres something telling me it would be better if everything was working.

Now on to the rear...On the rallye with 14s my tyres rub on the arches over bumps but only big ones or going fast on roundabouts. If i was to put bigger tb's on then this would hold the car up a bit better so should not rub? If so what size bars do i want to get and do i upgrade the anti roll bar? If so what size roll bar do i need?

I dont mind about the back end being tight as the car is driven hard round corners and on tracks

Thanks in advance

I resume this has the 1.9 axle from the CTI on it now Nick? So currently you have a 19mm ARB instead of the Rallyes original 14mm one.

You really want to upgrade the torsion bars if you want to actually stiffen the back. Uprating the ARB will make the back more slidey but give sharper handling. I think a 23mm ARB and 21mm torsion bar setup would assist, but there are much more experienced people who know more on the balance. Just make sure you uprate the front to suit. Don't bother with the 309 axle as I think you will struggle with the extra width in the Rallye shell and it is not really any better than an uprated 205 unit

Yes its a 1.9 beam, and my shocks are something like jamex with new avo 55mm springs that came off the cti

The rears are koni adjustable which are set to the hardest setting

I went for the Eibach 7001 springs - Not quite as low as yours but quality and performance are in a different league!

I think you have tried these before on the CTI Nick, but I have to agree with Ross's view.

Low is not necessarily the best. Suspension only works if it can move. I am guessing that the back is low to look visually in line with the front. Personally I would raise both a bit and you will find you can go faster over the terrible british roads we have and also get less catching. With the back catching, it all depends where it is actually catching. On a non GTI it is often the rear bumper, though you can deck a non-GTI if you use the right offset wheels, like a 1.6 GTI / Harrier alloy.

See i dont think the car is that low (see pic)

Ross - you are not running a 6 engine tho are you so i have the added weight?

My wheels are catching the metal arch and tearing the yokis and they are only 185s, so i thought stiffer tbs would sort this

Before I moved to coilovers i used 7001s, there will no doubt be some pictures in my rebuild topic, and i thought the height and ride with them was fine, and that was with a '6 engine. The are meant to be 40mm lower i think for a std GTI, and are progressively wound. The only reason i changed was the dampers were getting a little tired and i wanted some more castor/camber.

The difference between a quality spring like an Eibach and just any old lowering spring is immense, both in ride quality and handling.

Interesting you are back to running the Konis on the rear now.

Deffinatly.

I remember the first drive out in my brothers 205 S16 after i converted it. When i first bought the car with the a blown HG 8 valve, i did think the lowering springs fitted by the previous owner were a bit soft on the tow home. I then chucked the 16v Iron block in it, and it would bounce down the road doing 100+ :D

When i removed them, you could compress 3 coils with your hand rather easily B)

What shocks do i want with the eibachs then?

Also looking at motor sport world the 7001s are 30mm drop and the 7004s are 35mm - 40mm?

Lastly what do i do with my rear end then as it needs stiffning up?

Taylorspug - the konis are much stiffer than the bilis i found so does not grind as much

I am gonna try bilstein b6 shocks with eibach springs ?

21mm torsion bars

23mm arb

Does this sound like a good set up?

What springs do i want as the recomended 7001s only drop it 25mm-30mm, but they do a 7004 which drops it 35mm-40mm?

I would concur, except for the 23mm ARB, I'd stick with standard 19mm GTi one which feels much more progressive and communicative IMO, but it's very much a subjective issue.

Im still sceptical about that, they were yellow yes, but they were way too soft when i looked at them IMO.

Eiback only do one lowering spring for the 205, I know the other is listed but it's a known problem and rasies the car, The 7001/120 is the one which lower's a GTi around 20mm from std, I would also use the Challenge spec damper's as the B6's are for use with Std height car's so the Damper rod would be wrong.
