Aux Belt Eating Cambelt Cover.

Recommended Posts

Rich_p

We stripped the car (309gti k plate) ready for a cambelt change and discovered the aux belt has eaten through the cambelt cover.

The crank pully had no movement so not sure why this has happened.

We did discover the car has an earlier engine with the spring type tensioner fitted.

If the cover was the original for the car, which should have had the other type of tensioner fitted could this have caused the issue? Eg does the cover stick out further than the old type?

sprung tensioner is the earlier type, though later cars with the sprung tensioner did have a plastic top section rather than a steel one.

could be that the alternator has previously worked loose, doesn't take long to wear a groove in those covers.
