Will Swap Beer For Air Flow Meter...

Recommended Posts

Guest dobbo

I'm after a big favour, hoping someone in the W-s-M/Bristol area can help me.

I've got an intermittent diagnostic fault with my car, having replaced a bunch of bits I'm stuck wondering if the AFM is the cause. Put a multimeter on it and tested it for flap position and temperature changes and whilst it does appear to output different values depending on temp/flap position, who knows if they are right....

So can anyone in my area bring a known good AFM to my house so I can borrow it for 10 minutes? I'll be happy to exchange a crate of beer for you time!

Car is a late model 1993 1.9GTI with Motronic management.

Ok, whacked a multi-meter on it and got totally different readings to what that page describes. The link suggests a range from 60 ohms to 1kohms, with a smooth progression inbetween.

I get 40 ohms, then at around halfway it's reading 1400 ohms, before then fluctuating between 800/1200 then drops to 600 ohms fully open.

As I wanted to see what the behaviour of a "normal" meter was, I tested another bosch AFM from another car (not a pug), and see a range from 40ohms, then jumps to 2,000ohms at a very small opening before dropping down to 500 and progressively increasing to 1,000. This suggests to me that the initial jump is to be expected, but after that it should be a steady increase to 1kohms, which isn't what I get. From this I'm guessing the AFM is fubar.

Found out the same AFM was fitted to various Vauxhalls over the same time period so I've managed to source one to replace it, fingers crossed.
