skanny 0 Posted September 28, 2008 The temerature guage in the car is not working. I bought it off a friend who says he is sure it did work but then it stopped. If it makes any difference mine is a 1.6 shell with a 1.9 engine in it, maybe the clocks are 1.6 and not reading the sensoe in the 1.9 engine??? Does anyone have any resistance values for the temp sensor so i can check to see if thats at fault? Also which sensor is it? as i look over the engine from the front i can see 2 right next to each other. and does anyone know what colour the wire 'should' be? Any help and guidane apreciated! The bron plug your on about is that the one that the stop and the temp senssors plug into before they join into the main loom? I have noticed a few other 'brown' plugs too. skanny 0 Posted September 29, 2008 I have been out tonight and poked and prodded some wires and heres my results STOP, temp light (red at the end of the guage scale) both illuminate with ignition on and go out when engine started. With engine running i grounded the nearside sensor on the back of the thermostat housing and the temp guage went nearly up to max but no temp warning light came on. I grounded the offside sensor and nothing happened at all, no STOP light no nothing. I incidentally used a test lamp as the bit of wire to ground the 2 plugs because it was the only thing i had with a croc clip on the end, now when i grounded the temp sensor the light lit up really brightly ( i measured 13+V there) then i grounded the stop one the light was not nearly so bright ( only measured +9V there) Can anyone shed any light on it? Can anyone let me know what under the dash i need to ground to get the STOP light on? I dont want to be grounding random wires! Thanks Colin Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I dont want to be grounding random wires!Check your Haynes as this will give you the wiring diagram, then you can figure out which wire to the fuse board in the glove box, or back of the dash. I grounded the offside sensor and nothing happened at all, no STOP light no nothing. this sounds like the warning light, it should certainly do the red at the end of the gauge and think the stop too. not sure if grounding it actually makes it light, considering its only one wire it would make sense. I had one that gently leaked (don't ask me how as its all brass on the other side) its a hexagonal tube about an inch long, with a plastic fitting in the top... if so you can get a new one from pug for about 15 quid + vat. or speak to anyone with a dead engine. hope this helps. Hang on a mo, Let me get this right, There are 2 sensors on the back of the thermo housing. One for the temp guage and one for the stop light? Im guessing that the stop light either comes on when your oil pressure is too low or the water temp too high (maybe oil temp too high too?) In addition to this the guage above the water temp does not register either, is this the Oil temp? I grounded the sensor on the front of the block just to the right of tha alternator and that guage went right up to max but again no stop light came on? You won't get the stop light on by grounding the oil pressure gauge sensor,its the smaller switch to the right of the gauge sensor that will put the stop light on. On my engine/loom the two sensors for the coolant are colour coded,red spade connector goes on the sensor with a red plastic band around it,yellow spade connector to sensor with yellow plastic band around it.
